Chambersburg boys down Waynesboro, 57-29

GREENCASTLE — A strong second-half run carried the Chambersburg boys basketball team to a victory in the team’s season opener Friday night.

The Trojans outscored Waynesboro 16-2 in a run that took the score from 30-21 to 46-23 starting midway in the third period, and they went on to claim a 59-27 win. Chambersburg will face the winner of James Buchanan vs. Greencastle-Antrim in the Franklin County Tip-Off Tournament final on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Leading 30-17 at the half, the Trojans suffered a bit of a scoring drought to open the second half and the Indians took advantage to pull within 30-21.

“At that point, they had the momentum,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “They’d made a couple of baskets and Joel (Torres) had a foul called on him.

“But then we responded with that 16-2 run. That was a big step for us and showed some mental toughness. Cade Brindle was right in the middle of that run — he put together a good stretch there.”

Defense played a big role in the burst of points, with turnovers leading to several fast breaks.

“We had a few breakdowns on defense, but you’ll have that this early in the season,” Shreffler said. “Overall, though, I was pleased. We had balanced scoring, we had a number of kids get their first taste of varsity play, and we showed some depth, which should be a strength of ours.”

Brindle and Tyron Williams each scored 11 points to lead the Trojans, while Cota Heckman added 9 and Torres had 8. For the Indians, Logan Weibley tallied 10 points.
