The Waynesboro Indians will be looking to continue their momentum from last years season as they finished with 7 wins and 4 loses. For someone looking from the outside in, 7-4 may seem like a mediocre record but looking at the numbers, the Indians had a rough start but began to roll over their opponents in the second half of the season winning their final 6 games before falling to Governor Mifflin in the playoffs.
Although only 2 of their wins came against teams with over a .500% record, head coach Steve Myers knows that quality wins are not easy to come by in the Mid-Penn Colonial conference.
Coach Myers has tirelessly worked with his players throughout the heat of preseason camp to get ready for the up coming season where his hopes are just as high as the dedicated Indian fans hopes are.
The Indians will be opening their season up at home against Red Lion this Friday September 1st at 7:00 PM. The Indians play their home games at 550 East 2nd St. Waynesboro, PA 17268.
Waynesboro will be challenged this year with a similar schedule as they did last season. The upcoming season schedule is: September 1st vs. Red Lion. Sep. 8th vs. Lancaster Catholic. Sep. 15 @ Gettysburg. Sep. 22 vs. Shippensburg. Sep. 29 @ Northern York. Oct. 6th vs West Perry. Oct. 13th @ Big Spring. Oct. 20th @ Greencastle- Antrim. Nov. 3rd @ Mifflin County. All scheduled games will take place on a Friday night at 7:00 PM.
This years opening game will be no small task as the Indians are to play Red Lion whom have been improving their record under Head Coach Jesse Shay’s tenure. Red Lion had finished the regular season undefeated in 2016 falling to Central Dauphin East in the first round of the District III 6A playoffs.
In last years contest Waynesboro fought hard against the Lions as the score was close entering the 4th quarter at 17-14. It was the final quarter that proved to be too much for the Indians as the Lions scored 21 unanswered points on their way to a 38-14 victory.
The Indians need to expect another hard fought battle as week 1 of the football season proves the key to many unanswered questions following the off season. I am excited to see how the Indians will move forward as they build their legacy as they look to continue their success from the strong 2016 season.
