Shippensburg erupted for six runs in the fourth inning, five of them coming with two outs and defeated Greencastle 11-7 and now need just one victory to clinch the District 14 title. The loss sends Greencastle to the losers bracket where they will play the winner of the Dillsburg -Northeastern game on Monday at 6:00 p.m. at Doc Norcross Stadium in Shippensburg.
Shippensburg sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, Greencastle used four pitchers, and had to face eight batters to record the final out. The inning was highlighted by a long 2 run homer from Tucker Chamberlin and a 2 run double from Kade Rumbaugh. Shippensburg scored at least one run in each of the first five innings.
Shippensburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a 2 run single by Erby Weller. Greencastle quickly struck back in the bottom of the inning. Leadoff batter Jackson Eby walked and Austin Kerns followed with a 2 run homer. Greencastle then went ahead for the only time in the game when Darren Kline homered for a 3-2 advantage.
Shippensburg tied the game in the second inning on an RBI single from Dom Forintino and took the lead they never relinquished in the third on Kade Rumbaugh’s sacrifice fly.
Adian Grudzinski also homered for Greencastle in the fifth inning.
Dom Forintino was the winning pitcher for Shippensburg.
Greencastle falls to a record of 6-1 overall in the District 14 Tournament. Shippensburg improves to 6-1.
Shippensburg will play the survivor of the losers bracket on Tuesday night with a chance to clinch the District 14 Championship and a berth in the Section 7 Tournament at Exeter Township.
In other action Saturday Dillsburg eliminated South Middleton with a 12-1 win and plays Northeastern Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at York City. The winner of that game will play Greencastle Monday night.
