Greencastle backed by three home runs and another strong pitching performance powered its way to a 10-4 win over Northeastern Thursday night at Spring Grove to improve to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the double elimination District 14 Championship Tournament.
Carter Reid hit a 2 run homer in the first inning and Andrew Kerns added a solo blast as Greencastle jumped out to another early lead. Jackson Eby opened the bottom of the first with a single and winning pitcher Carter Reid stepped to the plate and blasted a 2 run homer to centerfield to give Greencastle a quick 2-0 lead. Three batters later Andrew Kerns hit a solo shot to left field to cap a three run first inning.
Reid retired the first 6 batters of the game including striking out the side in the second. inning but Northeastern cut into Greencastle’s lead. After a couple of walks in the third inning Cole Eichelberger hit a 2 run double to cut the Greencastle lead to 3-2. Greencastle got a run back in the bottom half of the third on an RBI double from Austin Wyand to extend the lead to 4-2.
Greencastle broke the game open with a five run fourth inning, the big blow being a Logan Black grand slam home run. Connor Rhom also added an RBI single in the fourth to give Greencastle a 9-2 lead.
Northeastern came right back in the top of the fifth with a two run homer from Quinn Shindler to cut Greencastle’s lead to 9-4.
Greencastle added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Andrew Kerns.
Carter Reid picked up the win going 4 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs on 2 hits, eight strikeouts and three walks.
Greencastle will play the winner of the Shippensburg-Dillsburg game Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. at Doc Norcross Stadium in Shippensburg.Shippensburg-Dillsburg was rained out Thursday night and game will be made up on Friday night.
Northeastern now 1-1 in the tournament will face Southern York County Friday night at York City. The loser of that game will be eliminated. The loss was the first of the post season for Northeastern.
