Greencastle Defeats South Middleton 11-2

mid penn updated logoThe Greencastle 12U Major Division All Stars won there fifth consecutive game with an 11-2 win over South Middleton in the first round of the District 14 Double Elimination Tournament at Spring Grove Wednesday night.

Greencastle trailing 1-0 in top of third inning got a leadoff walk from Jace Szaflarki followed by a single from Garret Decker. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and then Greencaastle took the lead on another wild pitch with pinch runner Adam Horst and Decker both scoring.

Greencastle added 3 more in the fifth on a 2 run double by Carter Reid and an RBI single by Connor Rhom to take a 5-1 lead. The bats then exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth highlighted by an opposite field 3 run homer by Jackson Eby.

Szaflarski picked up the win working 3 2/3 innings allowing 1 run, 3 hits, striking out 7 and walking just 1 batter.Carter Reid relieved Szaflarski in the fourth and recorded the final out. Andrew Kerns came on with one out in the sixth to retire the final 2 batters.

Both of South Middleton’s runs came on solo homers. Evan Samella lead of the bottom of the first with a homer to right field, and Ridge Crispino had a solo blast to left with one out in the sixth.

Logan Gellbaugh worked 4 1/3 innings for South Middleton strking out seven batters. Gellbaugh held Greencastle to just 2 unearned runs through the first four innings.

Greencastle will play Northeastern Thursday night at Spring Grove at 6:00 p.m.. Northeastern received a first round bye as a result of being the #2 Seed. Northeastern was 4-0 in East Pool Play and outscored there opponents 50-3.

In other 12U Shippensburg defeated Southern York County 11-3 and will play Dillsburg who is #1 Seed and received first round bye on Friday night at Shippensburg at 6:00 p.m.
