Trojans rally past Rams to swipe No. 2 ranking in softball

LINGLESTOWN — Chambersburg’s softball team made the trip to Central Dauphin for the second time this week thanks to a suspension by rain on Tuesday, and the Trojans made the second trip worth it.

Trailing 4-3 when the game was resumed, Chambersburg posted 3 runs in the sixth inning Thursday afternoon and hung on for a 6-5 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory.

The win allowed the Trojans (16-3, 11-3 MPC) to leapfrog over CD into the No. 2 spot in the District 3 Class 6A rankings, which would guarantee a home game in the semifinals if Chambersburg wins its quarterfinal game.

“We’re excited to get the No. 2 seed,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “I like our ballclub, especially if the bottom of the order can come through for us like they did today.”

Still trailing 4-3 entering the top of the sixth, the Trojans’ attack got it going against CD pitcher Brynn Barkley. After an out, Lauren Allison bunted for a base hit. Brooke Leedy then tried to bunt Allison to second, but failed twice. But she made up for it with a single up the middle.

Bree Paetow loaded the bases with an infield hit to deep shortstop. Karley Skultety worked Barkley for a walk on four pitches to bring in Allison and tie the game. The Rams then brought in ace pitcher Stella Gasper to face Sam Paetow. On an 0-2 count, Paetow singled to bring in two runs and make it 6-4.

Reliever Saleen Null got CD out in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a 5-4-3 double play. In the seventh, Null gave up a home run to the leadoff batter, Macey Fisher, but  retired the next 3 batters on a strikeout and two ground balls to end the game.

In the first inning Tuesday, the Trojans jumped ahead 1-0 in the first when Bree Paetow and Skultety hit singles, Sam Paetow was walked intentionally and Addison Gsell got an RBI on a grounder.

In the third, Skultety produced a base hit and Sam Paetow singled. A Gsell grounder moved the runners up, then the Rams walked Null intentionally. That backfired when the next two batters, Morgan Lehman and Malia Cramer, both drew bases-loaded walks to score runs.

Bree Paetow was 3-for-4 in the game.

Chambersburg will play a makeup game at Greencastle on Friday at 4:15.

The Trojans’ next game will then be Thursday, May 23 at Norlo Park, likely at 4:30. The Trojans get a bye in the first round, then will likely take on the winner of a first-round game between Carlisle (No. 7, 13-6-1) and Northeastern (12-7) in the quarterfinals. Pairings should become official on Friday.
