Chambersburg roundup: CV edges softball; boys lax stays hot

SOFTBALL
Cumberland Valley 3, Chambersburg 2: The Trojans battled tooth and nail against the unbeaten Eagles, but CV scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory on Monday night in New Kingstown.

Samantha Paetow

“The girls battled their hearts out tonight,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “I saw no signs of frustration and no signs of giving up, which makes me proud.”

CV (12-0, 9-0 MPC) went ahead 1-0 in the second inning when Gracie Lau walked and eventually scored on a hit by Rylie Brill. In the fourth, Brill hit a double over the bag at third base and scored on Grayson Trybulski’s base hit.

In the seventh, Emma Stroup reached on an infield base hit and went to second on a fielder’s choice. Saleen Null walked Sydney May intentionally, but struck out the next batter for the second out. Then Lau looped a single to centerfield and Stroup raced home with the winning run.

May was once again strong on the mound for the Eagles, allowing only 4 hits, with no walks and 12 strikeouts.

In Chambersburg’s sixth inning, Karley Skultety reached base on an error. Sam Paetow, who was 2-for-3, then crushed a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field to tie the game 2-2. It was her third home run in the last four games.

Kori Leedy pitched the first 4.1 innings for Chambersburg (10-3, 5-3 MPC) and gave up 7 hits, but only 2 runs. Null went 2.1 innings, allowing 3 hits.

Coach Skultety said, “We were right there with the top seed in District 3 and had our chances. They just made one more play and got one more hit than we did today. These are the games that get us ready for the playoffs and that we love to be in.”

Quinn Makosy

BOYS LACROSSE
Chambersburg 11, Red Land 6: The Trojans remained hot, taking down the Patriots for their fifth win in their last six games, in a non-league contest at Trojan Stadium on Monday night.

“Awesome team effort, and our domination of groundballs won us that game,” Chambersburg coach Joey Wilmot said. “Our defensive mids were all over the place. Tavian Ferguson, Quinn Makosy, Dayre Senft and Garrett Iser were all dominant on defense, groundballs and transition. Quinn, in particular, was fantastic in transition.”

For the Trojans (6-7), Logan Mulkey fired in 4 goals, Sam Kunkleman had 2 goals and an assist, Makosy had 2 goals, and single goals were produced by Riley Harmon (1 assist, 9-for-13 faceoffs); Iser (1 assist) and Ryan Cosey (1 assist), and Matt Tucker and Ferguson also had assists.

Kristian Freeman made 12 saves in goal.

“When Kristian plays well, we play well,” Wilmot said. “We’ve had different guys lead the scoring lately and today it was Logan Mulkey. We get some much-needed rest now before a big game Saturday against Conestoga Valley.”
