McConnellsburg Beats Conemaugh Township to Claim D5 Class A Title

McConnellsburg 3, Conemaugh Township 2. Senior wing Gemma Gordon scored twice in the second half to lead the top-ranked McConnellsburg Lady Spartans to a 3-2 win over the second-ranked Conemaugh Township Lady Indians and its second District 5 Class 1A girls soccer title in three seasons on Nov. 4, at Bedford High School.

Two minutes into the first half, defender Braylin Barnes received a corner kick from senior wing Sydney Buterbaugh and shot on goal. Although the Indians’ goalkeeper handled the ball, it was ruled to have crossed the goal line, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead. McConnellsburg held that lead at halftime, recording 15 shots, five on goal, to the Indians’ five shots, one on goal.

Seven minutes into the second half, Buterbaugh’s cross found Gemma Gordon wide open in front of goal for the Spartans’ second score. Three minutes later, Gordon converted a short-range shot off a pass from Marin DeShong to make it 3-0. The Indians then pressured the Spartan defense for seven to eight minutes, scoring twice to narrow the gap. McConnellsburg countered in the closing minutes with several near misses, including three shots off the crossbar. In the final seconds, the Spartans kept the ball away from the Indians and ran out the clock to secure the win and championship.

The Spartans (21-0-1) will host second-ranked District 7 Winchester Thurston on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
