McConnellsburg sweeps Mountaineers

McConnellsburg 5, Berlin 0: The Spartans blanked the visiting Berlin Brothersvalley Mountaineers in an Oct. 8 cross-conference match, extending their winning streak to 12 games and recording their fifth shutout.

McConnellsburg scored four goals in the first half. On the Spartans’ opening possession, Lincoln McKelvy passed to Hoyt Glenn, who fired from the 18-yard line past the goalkeeper. Six minutes into the game, Noah Jefferson was fouled, setting up a free kick from about 25 yards. Glenn’s untouched shot found the net for a 2-0 lead. With 14 minutes remaining, Chris Ebersole controlled a goal kick near midfield and passed to Glenn, who completed his hat trick. With less than two minutes left, Jace Fletcher followed up his own deflected shot and scored on the loose ball, giving the Spartans a 4-0 halftime lead.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Chris Ebersole passed to Glenn, who scored the fifth goal. The Spartans outshot the Mountaineers 19-5 in the second half, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Totals — MHS: 5 goals, 42 shots, 21 shots on goal, 5 corners, 3 assists, 4 goalkeeper saves, 3 fouls, and 6 free kicks. BBV: 0 goals, 11 shots, 4 shots on goal, 1 corner, 17 goalkeeper saves, 6 fouls, and 3 free kicks.

Glenn led all scorers with four goals on nine shots, including four on goal. McKelvey recorded eight shots, four on goal, and one assist. McConnellsburg has won 11 games by at least three goals this season and 18 of its last 19 home games.

The Spartans (12-0, 5-0 ICC-E) will host Conemaugh Township in a non-league match at 1 p.m. Oct. 9.

McConnellsburg Shuts Out Berlin Brothersvalley

McConnellsburg 2, Berlin Brothersvalley 0. The Lady Spartans defeated the visiting Berlin Brothersvalley Lady Mountaineers in a conference match on Oct. 8, extending their winning streak to 13 games. The victory was their 12th shutout of the season and ninth straight.

McConnellsburg scored first when Laynee Hendershot received a midfield pass from Brookelynn Gelvin and converted from the 18-yard line. Five minutes into the second half, Kya Washabaugh delivered a pass from the 30-yard line to Gemma Gordon, who scored from the 6-yard line. The goal was Gordon’s 84th of her career, breaking the record set by Erin (Chafardon) Swope in 2009.

Totals: MHS — 2 goals, 25 shots, 13 shots on goal, 10 corners, 2 goalkeeper saves, 3 fouls and 4 free kicks. BBV — 0 goals, 9 shots, 2 shots on goal, 2 corners, 11 goalkeeper saves, 4 fouls and 3 free kicks.

The Spartans (13-0, 8-0 ICC-S) will host Conemaugh Township in a non-conference match at 11 a.m. on Oct. 10.
