Big-play passing game, strong D lift Trojans over Herd, 33-13

CHAMBERSBURG — Chambersburg wide receiver Jashaun Palmer and quarterback Cam Green have a connection that goes back several years.

“We’ve been best friends since we were in the sixth grade,” Palmer said.

That vibe helped the dynamic duo connect for 6 completions good for 183 yards and three touchdowns in the Trojans’ 33-13 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over rival Carlisle on Friday night for Homecoming in Trojan Stadium.

“We had a blast tonight,” Green said.

Both teams came in with 1-5 records, but Chambersburg’s defense put a clamp on the Thundering Herd in the first half and the offense came through with three scores for a 20-0 halftime advantage.

Trojan coach Gary Carter said, “We let them get that one ugly drive in the third quarter when we made some mistakes. We did our assignments really well and the linebackers communicated well.”

Linebacker Mason Mowen said, “We knew we had to shut the quarterback down, and last week the (Altoona) quarterback hurt us. Tonight we stuffed that pretty good.”

At halftime, Carlisle (1-6, 1-5 MPC) had one first down, and that was by penalty, and 20 total yards. QB Carter Wilson gained only 10 yards on 12 carries.

The only drive the Herd managed to do much with was the opening drive in the third period, when they used 14 plays to go 90 yards, ending with a 1-yard run by QB Carter Wilson. In that drive, Carlisle converted two 3rd-and-long situations and were helped by four offsides penalties against the Trojans (2-5, 2-4 MPC). Wilson was changing his count to draw Chambersburg offside and it worked 5 times in the game.

“We just can’t make it clean,” Carter said. “I guess the guys were just a little too aggressive.”

But it turned out to not matter, because the offense did its part.

In the first quarter, Chambersburg recovered its first fumble of the season when Isaiah Wright latched onto a fumbled punt at the Carlisle 31. On 3rd-and-goal from the 6, Green flipped a pass to the corner of the end zone and Brock Chlebowski made a nice touchdown catch while being hit.

Palmer ran a nifty post pattern early in the second quarter and Green hit him in stride for a 57-yard scoring play. Later in the period, Green rolled left and saw Cam McNew free deep and delivered a pass that McNew caght while falling back into the end zone.

After the Herd’s long drive to open the second half, the Trojans came right back for a score on 3rd-and-6. Green came to his left, then turned and fired into the right side of the end zone, where Palmer hauled in a 26-yard TD.

Chambersbug’s next possession ended in a blocked punt that the Herd’s Jayce Jones recovered in the end zone, making it 26-13.

No worries. The Trojans leaned on running back Malachi Tasker to ground up some yardage and burn the clock and he succeeded behind an offensive line that pushed Carlisle back. After a holding call that wiped out a Tasker run of 33 yards to the end zone, it was 3rd-and-15 at the 33.

Once again, Green rolled left, then passed back to Palmer for his third TD connection.

Green, who completed 14 of 18 passes for 274 yards and 5 TDs, said, “On that play, I just roll left and trust that my receiver is going to get open.”

“It was the same play as the one before, or pretty much,” Palmer said. “I just put on a move to get open.”

Carter said, “They were missing backside coverage. We called one of those plays and Cam made one on his own.”

Tasker was a workhorse, ending up with 102 yards on 29 carries.

“I was expecting to carry the load tonight,” Tasker said. “I had a feeling this morning when I woke up that might happen. The O-line picked up the blocking in the second half, especially on their linebackers.”

NOTES: Chambersburg travels to play unbeaten Harrisburg next Saturday, 1 p.m. … Jusdon Augustin made an interception in the fourth quarter for the Trojans … In that crazy drive by Carlisle in the third period that took all but 3:08 of the period, Chambersburg was penalized 4 times for 20 yards, the Herd was assessed 1 penalty for 5 yards, and Carlisle lost yardage on four plays for a total of 20 yards.
