Chbg. roundup: Tennis finishes 9-6; volleyball wins on ‘special’ night

GIRLS TENNIS
Chambersburg 4, Lower Dauphin 1: The Trojans closed out their dual meet season with a convincing non-league win over the Falcons on Monday afternoon at Norlo Park.

Sophie Keller

Chambersburg finished with a 9-6 record for the second consecutive season and ended up just outside the power rankings for the District 3 Class 3A tournament.

“The girls just keep bouncing back — we had a hard-fought loss to CV on Friday, but were ready to compete in the windy conditions today,” Chambersburg coach Nico Mucci said. “Lower Dauphin is a great team and we knew it would be close, and it was.”

The two really tight matches both went the Trojans’ way. At No. 2 singles, Charlie Kalathas won the first set 6-1, dropped the second 7-5 and then took a 6-4 win. At No. 2 doubles, Sophie Keller and Kendall Temchack fell behind with a 6-4 defeat in the first set, then won a close one, 7-5, before clinching with a 10-8 tiebreaker victory.

Mucci said, “We needed comeback victories from Charlie and No. 2 doubles to seal the team win.”

Chambersburg’s other two wins came in singles, with No. 1 Leah Wadel cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win and No. 3 Olivia Keller taking a 6-4, 6-4 victory. At No. 1 doubles, Gretta Hill and Nina Kuchar fell 6-1, 6-2.

“It’s been so much fun being able to coach this group of girls this season,” Mucci said. “It’s going to be tough to lose our seniors, but I hope they know how proud I am for their work this season, and I’m excited to get to work with them as the team prepares to compete at the Mid Penn tournament.”

Ty Frelin

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Chambersburg 3, Carlisle 0: In a special event for the volleyball program, the Trojans rolled to wins of 25-9, 25-15 and 25-11 to dominate the Thundering Herd in a non-league contest at CASHS Field House on Monday evening.

“What a special night,” Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said. “Tonight we celebrated 50 years of Lady Trojan volleyball and we played one of our original opponents, Carlisle.”

Grace Myers led the Trojans (6-5) in assists (18) and digs (12). Other stat leaders included Maddie Rydbom in blocks (3), Lexi Poe in service points (12) and Kasey Moser in kills (12).

Moser also had 10 digs, 11 points and 2 blocks; Ayla Whiteley had 2 blocks and 6 kills; Kylee Perry had 10 digs and 14 assists; Natalie Miller scored 10 points; Olivia Shearer knocked down 9 kills and Lizzy Porter contrubuted 10 digs.

Frelin, who has been with the program for 41 years, said, “We played extremely well tonight and had a lot of energy and drive. We served tough and put up a huge block all match long. It was a fun evening and a great match.”

Joplin Frazer

GIRLS SOCCER
Mechanicsburg 2, Chambersburg 0: The Wildcats scored a pair of goals early in the second half to put an end to what had been a scoreless game against the Trojans in a Mid Penn Commonwealth matchup on the road Monday night.

Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said, “We played the best half of our season in the first 40 minutes with a unified, connected and intense approach. But Mechanicsburg came out strong in the second half. Despite suffering a red card with 15 minutes left (for denial of a goal-scoring opportunity), we stayed in the fight and didn’t allow any more significant chances.

“Freshman Joplin Frazer played a flawless game at left back.”

The Wildcats (10-2) are ranked No. 2 in the District 3 Class 3A power rankings. Chambersburg is now 3-9 (1-7 MPC).
