GREENCASTLE — Greencastle had a rough time on both sides of the ball in a non-league football contest against South Western on Friday night at Kaley Field.

But the offense was particularly throttled by the Mustangs in a 30-14 decision.

The Blue Devils managed just 4 first downs for the game and couldn[t sustain any kind of drive.

“We just could not get anything going on offense,” G-A coach Jason Thurston said. “South Western did a great job of moving the sticks, which was our game plan coming into the game. But we had a lot of three-and-outs — we have to do a better job on offense.”

Greencastle (1-1) trailed only 10-7 at halftime, thanks to a 94-yard kickoff return by Dane Medina following a touchdown by South Western’s Blake McMillion on a 7-yad pass from Seth Sullivan.

The Mustangs (2-0) were able to score three more TDs by the time the Blue Devils could score again. Wyatt Carbaugh, Sullivan and Colton Cassetta each had a scoring run to build the lead to 30-7 in the fourth quarter.

G-A’s final points came an 80-yard pass from Gavin Logsdon to Wyatt Hull after Logsdon scrambled out of pressure. Without that play, Greencastle managed only 36 yards of offense.

Thurston said, “We thought we were wearing them out by the end of the first half. But in the second half, they actually wore us down.”

Top tacklers for the Blue Devils included Luke Hull with 7, Dominic Angelini (6), Ethan South (6) and Damien Johns (5).

Greencastle will travel to play at James Buchanan next Friday night.
