Trojans open season 2-0: Chambersburg participated in a tournament at Big Spring on Saturday in its first competition of the season, and collected a pair of wins, over Susquenita (4-2) and Big Spring (5-0).

Deklin Shank

In the first game against the Blackhawks, Brandon Arana and Deklin Shank scored goals in the first half and Cardson Ymonnice had an assist, but the Trojans were tied 2-2 with less than 10 minutes left in the game.

Then Shank took an assist from Levi Findley and scored with 7 minutes left, and Mason Schenzel popped in a goal from a Jason Lopez pass 2 minutes later to seal the win.

Chambersburg coach Marc Furfaro, who was debuting as the Trojan head coach, said, “They were a solid team with an incredible player (Mason Jenkins), who had both of their goals. He broke us down twice and finished. We kept battling, with over 20 shots, but their keeper made some good saves. The winning goal came on a nice cross from Levi to Deklin.”

In the final vs. the host Bulldogs, the Trojans (2-0) did not score until late in the first half, but Lincoln Vanaman broke the ice (assisted by Brennen Smith) and Lopez doubled it with a penalty kick. In the second half. Schenzel scored twice and Lopez added a goal, with Shank assisting twice and Arana once.

Furfaro said, “They came out in a low block with 10 players behind the ball and did a great job of being organized for the first 30 minutes. It was just a matter of time until we finished one of our chances, and that opened the game up. It wasn’t always pretty, but we found a way to get the two wins.”

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Chambersburg wins invitational: The Trojans competed in the PTXC 17 at Kutztown University’s The Farm Course on Saturday and came home with the team championship. Chambersburg scored 55 points to 61 for Red Land and 65 for Daniel Boone.

“I was pleased with our effort and it was nice win the Gold race,” Chambersburg coach Chris Monheim said.

Natalie Quinn placed third in 20:00.50 to pace the Trojans, who put all five scorers in the top 15.

Lilly Spohn placed 8th with a time of 21:08.94, Bella Rife was 10th in 21:53.67, Taliya Raber crossed the line in 11th (22:23.49) and Kaylie Savage placed 15th in 22:38.13.

Also competing were Maggie Holtry (21st, 23:36.84) and Darcy Aurand (2th, 24:09.57).

Monhiem said, “Quinn continues to look strong up front for us, and our remaining top-five runners ran well to pick up top-20 medals.”

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Chambersburg is PTXC runner-up: Central Bucks East proved to be a little too strong, but the Trojans claimed second place at the PTXC 17 race at Kutztown University on Saturday. CB East totaled 27 points, Chambersburg had 64 and Twin Valley had 83.

The Trojans placed all of their scorers within the top 19 placers. Boston Vincenti ran a time of 17:25.58 over the 5,000-meter course to earn a sixth-place finish.

The other scorers for Chambersburg were Cole Lehman (11th in 17:43.28), Tobias Willson (14th in 18:05.06), Liam Coy (18:16.97) and Gavin Wenger (19th in 18:30.02). The next two Trojans were Aaron Goshorn in 20th (18:34.49) and Ben Lin in 26th (18:55.16).

Chambersburg coach Jim Boyer said, “The team should feel good about how we’re racing early in the season here, keeping connected on the course with their teammates and finishing strong. I’m looking forward to what should be another competitive meet for us on Tuesday (vs. Carlisle and Mifflin County).

“I was pleased that our gap was only 65 seconds between 1 and 5, and 90 seconds between our first and seventh.”

The Trojan boys also won the team title in the JV race.
