SoFo Indians (19-2) defeated Northern Bedford County Varsity Panthers 4-1 on Thursday at McConnellsburg High School to win the PIAA District V Championship for the 5th time in 6 years.
The Indians wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Austin Mann singled to center field, Kaden Saunders singled down the right field line, and Lincoln Hendershot grounded into a fielder’s choice, each scoring one run.
Saunders earned the win for SoFo. The pitcher surrendered four hits and one run over six innings, striking out nine and walking one. Ty Kagarise took the loss for Northern Bedford County Panthers. The hurler went one inning, surrendering three runs on three hits, striking out none and walking two. Owen Oakman collected the 3 up 3 down save in the bottom of the 7th.
Brooks Norris led SoFo with two hits in two at bats and had a sacrifice fly in the 6th. Lincoln Hendershot, Norris, Saunders, and Mann each drove in one run for SoFo Indians. SoFo worked the count all day, collecting six walks. The Indians defense thwarted a big NBC rally in the 5th inning by getting out of a 1st and 2nd no out jam. The next batter followed with a sharp single to center fielder Colt Mann who proceeded to throw out the runner at home attempting to score from second base. Austin Mann proceeded to throw out an attempted base stealer at 2nd base and a strike out ended the inning.
Leadoff hitter Kolson Feathers led Northern Bedford County Panthers with two hits in three at bats.
SoFo will enter the PIAA State Tournament on Monday. They will play Homer Center at McConnellsburg High School most likely at 7:00pm but start time has not been officially confirmed by PIAA yet.
