Blue Devils top Patriots to reach Mid Penn softball final

LINGLESTOWN — Greencastle-Antrim’s offense exploded for 15 hits and 11 runs to overcome 5 errors and a strong Red Land team on Wednesday afternoon at Central Dauphin.

The semifinal win boosts the Blue Devils (17-3) into the Mid Penn Conference championship game on Friday at 5 p.m. at Hershey High School. G-A will play Central Dauphin (19-1), which defeated Trinity 5-0 in the semifinals.

The offensive fireworks came one day after Greencastle was shut out on 5 hits by Chambersburg, and a day after Red Land pitcher Addie Wagenheim threw a no-hitter vs. West York.

“I guess we saved some hits for today, because we hit the ball very well,” Blue Devil coach Mark DeCarli said. “That’s the team I saw all year — there was a different look in their eyes. We got down 2-0 and the girls responded.”

The Patriots (18-3) scored twice in the top of the first, but Greencastle tallied 4 in the bottom half. Kylie Kerns delivered a 2-run base hit with the bases loaded and Kindal Rice followed with a single to drive in another 2 runs.

Brooklyn Sanchez belted a 3-run home run and drove in 4 runs total for the Blue Devils, leadoff batter Paiton Gordon was 4-for-4 and Rice went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs knocked in.

Greencastle led 5-3 after two innings, but after back-to-back 3-run innings in the fourth and fifth, G-A forged an 11-4 advantage. Red Land scored once in the sixth and posted 3 runs in the top of the seventh to make it close.

Kiersten Swain entered in relief with 2 outs and walked the first two batters to score a run, but she got the final out on a pop-up. Katie Zawilinski pitched the first 6.2 innings, giving up 9 hits and 4 earned runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Allison Logsdon and Gordon singled and Sanchez brought them home with a blast to centerfield. In the 3-run fifth, Lydia Pryke walked and Minnie Gambacurta doubled. One run scored on an error, Gordon singled for an RBI and the last run scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Swain.

DeCarli said, “It was good to see us hit today, and she (Addie Wagenheim) was a good pitcher, too. It was a good win over a very good team.”

Red Land had beaten G-A in the District 3 semifinals last spring with Wagenheim getting the win in the circle.
