G-A roundup: Blue Devils blank Mechanicsburg in baseball

BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 5, Mechanicsburg 0: The Blue Devils got a powerful performance from a trio of pitchers and closed out their regular season with a quality non-league victory over the Wildcats in a home game Monday afternoon.

Greencastle finished with a 17-2 record. Despite that fine mark, G-A will likely be the No. 3 seed for the District 3 playoffs, behind Palmyra (18-1) and Lower Dauphin (18-2), and will host a first-round game on Friday afternoon. Pairings will be announced by Wednesday.

Ryder Linn (7-0) started for the Blue Devils and pitched 3 innings, giving up 1 hit and no walks and struck out 5. Jaxson Bostick also pitched 3 innings, with 1 hit, no walks and 4 Ks on his ledger, then Cam Rakaczewski threw the final hitless inning. The three pitchers combined to throw a 2-hit shutout with zero walks and 10 strikeouts against the Wildcats (11-8).

G-A coach Eric Shaner said, “The pitching really set the tone for us. Ryder was great early and Bostick picked up where he left off in the middle innings. Rak closed the door in the seventh.”

In the bottom of the third inning of a scoreless game, Greencastle loaded the bases on a double by Mason Mellott and walks to Andrew Weaver and Rakaczewski. With 2 outs, Nolan Sullivan walked to score a run and Avery Horst’s single brought in 2 more to make it 3-0.

In the fifth, Sullivan lined a solo home run to left, and the Blue Devils added an insurance run when Horst walked, stole second and third base and scored on an error.

“We did a good job taking good at-bats and struck when we had a chance,” Shaner said. “We were able to play good complimentary baseball and get a nice win to build momentum heading into districts.”
