SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 14, Boiling Springs 6: The Blue Devils gave up a couple of longballs to the Bubblers and found themselves trailing 5-3 after 3 innings Wednesday afternoon, but got the hitting going to take a Mid Penn Colonial road win.
“I just think we came in a little flat, and got behind,” G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. “But the girls dug deep and played the way they can. We started to hit and put the pressure on them, and they made some errors and we capitalized on them.”
Homers by Kayla Fry and Peyton Lawyer for Boiling Springs (4-8, 2-8 MPC) made up for a Blue Devil home run to lead off the third by Kindal Rice.
Trailing 5-3, Greencastle (11-2, 8-2 MPC) scored 6 runs in the fourth inning to take control. An error, a sacrifice bunt by Minnie Gambacurta and a single by Allison Logsdon scored a run. A walk and another error loaded the bases and Brooklyn drew a walk for an RBI. Kylie Kerns singled in a run and another scored on the throw. Rice’s sac fly and Gambacurta’s infield hit brought in the final runs.
In the top of the seventh, G-A left no doubt by posting 5 more runs. After 2 errors, Sanchez belted a 3-run homer to center, and Lydia Pryke later clubbed a 2-run double.
Sanchez ended up with 4 runs batted in and Paiton Gordon scored 4 runs. Kiersten Swain earned the win with 5 innings of relief, allowing 6 hits, no walks and 1 run.
The Blue Devils travel to Norlo Park to take on Chambersburg in a big non-league game on Friday.
BASEBALL
Boiling Springs 4, Greencastle-Antrim 2, 9 innings: The Bubblers had given the Blue Devils their closest test so far in an earlier 4-2 loss; on Wednesday, Boiling Springs turned it around and gave G-A its first loss of the season in a Mid Penn Colonial matchup in Greencastle.
“It was a great ballgame,” Blue Devil coach Eric Shaner said. “It came down to execution, and they executed better than us in certain spots today. We made some great plays, but we uncharacteristically left some out there as well, and that was the difference today.”
In the top of the ninth, tied 2-2, Josh Snyder’s leadoff single and a walk and error had runners on second and third. Both scored when Aaron Fazel grounded a base hit into right field for the Bubblers (9-3, 7-3 MPC).
Boiling Springs scored in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Chance Flor. G-A (12-1, 9-1 MPC) came back in the bottom half to tie it when Bo Brookens singled, moved up on 2 wild pitches and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Landon Bishop.
Greencastle went ahead 2-1 in the fourth in similar fashion — Bo Brookens singled, got to second on a wild pitch and scored on Bishop’s base hit. The Bubblers tied it in the fifth on two singles and a fielder’s choice.
Jaxson Bostick went the first 4 innings for G-A, while Cam Rakaczewski threw 4.1 innings and took the loss. Dom Beck and Phoenix Houser split duties for the Bubblers, combining to limit the Blue Devils to just 7 hits.
Greencastle hosts Chambersburg in a big local showdown on Friday afternoon.
