Trojans upend ‘Boro in baseball to go to 10-1

SCOTLAND — Two of the top baseball teams in Class 6A of District 3 faced off Friday afternoon at Greene Township Park.

Bryce Deneen

No. 1-ranked Chambersburg got off to a quick start, putting up seven runs in the first two innings, and defeated No. 4 Waynesboro 11-4 in a non-league game.

Each team hit a red-hot line drive right at the pitcher and the difference in outcomes of those plays showed distinctly how the game was going to turn out.

In the bottom of first inning, the Trojans’ No. 2 batter, Aaron Vasquez, hit a shot up the middle. Indian pitcher John Kahl had almost no time to react and the ball glanced off his glove into his ankle. Kahl took some time to recover, and went back to pitching.

But Chambersburg (10-1) posted two runs in that inning. In the second, Kahl walked a batter and hit another, and Vasquez delivered a two-run single to make it 4-0. At that point, the Indians (6-3) brought in Chance Hall in relief.

In the second scenario, in the top of the fifth, Waynesboro finally got to starter Devon Nalewak, who lost his control. With the bases loaded, Rylan Nichols boomed a double to left-center field to score 3 runs, although he was thrown out at third base. When Nalewak walked the next batter, Cam Wadel entered in relief.

Wadel’s first batter, Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt, hit a rocket right at him. But Wadel, perhaps moving his glove an inch or two, shared the line drive to end the inning.

“That was a pretty fortunate first batter, but Cam kept us where we had to be,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “I think with Kahl, after he sat for an inning and came back out, it was tough for him. We were able to get some good swings against him in both innings.”

After Vasquez’s hit in the first, Ceagan Truett looped a single to left. Brady Truett smoked a line drove to left to score Vasquez, and an infield single with two outs by Aiden Appleby scored the second run.

In the second, Konner McMullen led off with a walk, then Bryce Deneen was hit by a pitch with an 0-2 count. After Vasquez hit his two-run single, the bases were loaded again thanks to two straight ‘Boro errors. Then Appleby hit a curving drive down the left-field line to clear the bases and make it 7-0.

Folmar said, “It’s been nice to play with a lead a lot this year. It means we can do more tings on offense, which is so much better than when you’re playing from behind.”

Right after the Indians scored to get within 7-3, the Trojans manufactured a run. Deneen, who reached base in all 4 of his at-bats, walked and advanced on a wild pitch, a fly ball and another wild pitch.

In the sixth, Ceagan Truett blasted a double to lead off. Brady Truett’s hot-shot single scored a run, and two more runs later scored on Matt Murphy’s hit and a passed ball. Connor Earley had an RBI single in the seventh for the Indians.

Nalewak stranded two runners in the first inning and three more in the second, then settled down until his control deserted him in the fifth. Between the two pitchers, Waynesboro notched only four hits, but did draw seven walks and was hit by a pitch three times.

Vasquez and Brady Truett each had three of the Trojans’ 13 hits, while Ceagan Truett and Appleby had two each.
