Trojans dominate Maidens to keep it rolling in softball

WAYNESBORO — Chambersburg’s softball team got off to a great start, taking a 5-0 lead after two innings on Friday afternoon.

The Trojans then blew the game up with an eight-run third inning and went on to defeat Waynesboro 13-0 in a five-inning, non-league game on the road.

“The girls continue to be all in on playing team ball and picking each other up, no matter how the game is going,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “These girls really care about the team and are an extremely fun group to be around.”

Chambersburg pitchers Issie Slimmer (3 innings) and Sanay Jones (2 innings) held the Maidens to just one hit, a single by Rylee Miller off Slimmer. Jones walked one, but struck out 5.

Skultety said, “Issue and Sanay slammed the door today and didn’t allow much traffic.”

Addy Gsell was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Chambersburg and knocked in four runs, while Marley Onomastico had three hits in three trips and produced three runs batted in.

Erissa Varner was 2-for-3 and every starter except one had a base hit for the Trojans.

“Marley had her best day at the plate today, hitting the ball hard every at-bat,” Skultety said. “Erissa continues to be a sparkplug at the top of the lineup and Addy had another nice day driving in runners.

“We have set ourselves up nicely for the toughest part of our schedule, with seven games in 12 days against top teams in the Mid Penn. We just need to stay consistent and be ourselves.”

The Trojans (7-1) face Big Spring (8-1), Mechanicsburg (7-3), Cumberland Valley (5-1), Shippensburg (7-3), Central Dauphin (4-1), State College (N/A) and Greencastle-Antrim (7-2) in the next two weeks.
