In Walk-Off, McConnellsburg Loses To Everett

McConnellsburg 1, Everett 2.  On April 7, an extra inning walk-off left the Spartans on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat to host Everett Warriors.  The conference game was tied at one in the bottom of the eighth when ninth batter Nolan Whisel singled, scoring the winning run from third.  The pitching was strong on both sides. The Warrior pitchers struck out 12, while the Spartans sat down nine.

Shaffer Earley’s solo home run to left field put the Spartans ahead in the top of the fourth inning.

Lane Whitfield responded with a double down the left field line, bringing Everett level with the Spartans and tying the game at one in the bottom of the fifth.

Kayden Marpoe got the start on the mound for the Spartans. The junior right-hander allowed four hits and one run across five and two-thirds innings, with seven strikeouts and three walks.  Relief pitcher Finn Kuhn was charged with the loss after pitching two innings for the Spartans, surrendering one run on five hits while striking out two and walking none. 

Chase Sherwood took the mound first for the Warriors, allowing five hits and one run across 6.1 innings, with 10 strikeouts and one walk. Relief pitcher Isaac Klahre secured the win for the Warriors by surrendering only one hit and no runs over 1.2 innings, striking out two and issuing two walks.

Earley went 1-for-4 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. Marpoe went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead in hits. Earley stole two bases while the Spartans stole four bases in total.

Everett had nine hits in the game, with both Whisel and Whitfield having two hits and one RBI apiece.

Next up, the Spartans (4-2, 1-1 ICC-S) travel to Northern Bedford County for a cross-conference game on April 11 at 1 p.m.

SOFTBALL

The Lady Spartans visited the Everett Lady Warriors for double-header conference games on April 7 and were overwhelmed 18-3 and 15-0 by the undefeated host team.

Next up, the Lady Spartans (3-4, 1-1 ICC-S) travel to Northern Bedford County for a cross-conference game on April 11 at 1 p.m.
