SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 7, Waynesboro 5: The Maidens held a lead for much of the game, but the Blue Devils put together a 5-run fifth inning and handed ‘Boro a Mid Penn Colonial defeat at home on Thursday afternoon.
Waynesboro’s Sierra Brosius relieved starter Emma Bradley to begin the fifth inning and Greencastle (5-1, 3-1 MPC) put together 4 straight singles, by Brooklyn Sanchez, Kylie Kerns, Kindal Rice (RBI) and Erika Hoover, with Hoover’s bringing in 2 runs.
After an out, Kiersten Swain singled and Miranda Martin followed with an RBI single. A fielder’s choice and an error scored an additional run, giving G-A a 7-4 lead.
G-A coach Mark DeCarli said, “Right now, we’re still trying to find our identity, and moving the lineup around a lot. We’re a work in progress, but today was a good comeback win that shold help our confidence.”
Lydia Pryke went the first 5 innings, allowing only 3 hits and 1 earned run, but the Blue Devils made 5 errors and she walked 8 batters. Katie Zawilinski pitched the final 2 innings for a save, giving up just 1 hit and 1 unearned run.
“We’re trying to work Zawilinski in as a closer, but she may get some starts down the road, too,” DeCarli said.
Rice had a 3-for-3 day, with 2 runs batted in, and Martin and Swain had 2 hits each. The Maidens are 2-4 (1-3 MPC).
BASEBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 7, Waynesboro 6: For 5 perfect innings, the Blue Devils were handcuffed by Indian starting pitcher Jack Knepper, but the tables turned in the fifth inning and G-A pulled out a big Mid Penn Colonial victory on Thursday at Waynesboro.
“It was an awesome win to get,” Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said. “We need to continue to take disciplined at-bats and we did a great job of that late. Waynesboro played a great game, but it was exciting to come back.”
Knepper was perfect through five innings. In the sixth for the Blue Devils (5-0, 3-0 MPC), Bryce Davidson led off with a single, and he scored on a balk and an error on a grounder by Andrew Weaver. After Cam Rakaczewski walked and Nolan Sullivan bunted them up a base, Avery Horst delivered a 2-run single. Manny Brookens and Mason Mellott also had key hits.
Still trailing 6-5 entering the seventh, Greencastle got a leadoff single by Davidson and he stole second and third bases. After 2 outs, Sullivan walked and Horst was intentionally walked to load the bases. Manny Brookens then came through with a clutch 2-RBI base hit to right.
Rakaczewski came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh, relieving winner Ryder Linn, and although he gave up a hit and a walk, he closed out the game.
For Waynesboro (4-2, 2-2 MPC), Knepper was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and Riley Eaton was 2-for-3 with a triple.
