Chbg. roundup: Baseball team rallies late to slide past Herd

BASEBALL
Chambersburg 4, Carlisle 3: The Trojans were shut out for 5 innings, but some late offense — including 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning — proved to be enough to sneak past the Herd in a non-league season opener at Greene Township Park on Thursday afternoon.

Brycen Murray

To open the seventh, Ryne Mills drew a walk and Aaron Vasquez bunted for a single. A pair of strikeouts put Chambersburg on the ropes, but Ceagan Truett lined a clutch single to center score Mills, tie the game and move Vasquez to second.

Brycen Murray then came up and laced a liner to left that fell for a hit, and Vasquez hustled home to score the game-winner.

“In our first scrimmage, we had some two-out RBI hits and we talked about how important that is,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “And that showed up today — we scored three runs on two-out hits.”

In the bottom of the sixth, trailing 3-0, the Trojans got one back on consecutive one-out singles by Aiden Appleby, Truett and Murray. With two outs, Brady Truett doubled to left to score the second run.

Mills pitched the first 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and striking out 8. Then Devon Nalewak entered and tossed 2 hitless innings for the win, walking 2 and fanning 2.

Folmar said, “Mills threw 27 pitches in the first period, which isn’t ideal. But he battled and gave us five innings to keep us in the game. Then Nalewak came in for his first varsity game and did a nice job.”

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 13, Central York 3: The Trojans put up 9 runs in the fourth inning, which was more than enough to subdue the Panthers in a non-league season opener on the road Thursday afternoon.

Marley Onomastico

“The girls came out with a lot of energy and positivity from the warmups to the final out,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “It was a great environment, as it has been from the first day of workouts.”

Chambersburg’s 11-hit attack was led by Errissa Varner, Sanay Jones, Marley Onomastico and Kendall Flory, with 2 hits each. Onomastico and Hensley Brookens each drove in 3 runs, while Jones (2 doubles) and Addy Gsell each came up with 2 RBIs.

In the big fourth inning, the Trojans had scored twice on Central York errors and had the bases loaded. Two straight strikeouts nearly halted the inning, but Piper Jones walked for an RBI and Onomastico followed with a bases-clearing double.

“That hit really broke open the game,” Skultety said.

Issie Slimmer pitched the first 4 innings for the Trojans and allowed 5 hits and 2 earned runs. Jones tossed the final 3 innings, giving up only 1 hit.

Skultety said, “Slimmer and Jones stepped up today after waiting four years to get their shot. It’s their time to carry on the strong pitching tradition at Chambersburg.”

GIRLS LACROSSE
Central Dauphin 16, Chambersburg 11: The Trojans had goals scored by six different players, but fell short of the Rams in a season-opening Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Linglestown on Thursday afternoon.

Savannah White

“For the first game of the season, I was happy with what I saw,” Chambersburg coach Shane Henry said. “The offense looked really good today — it was nice to have six different girls score.”

Reagan Barrett tallied 3 goals and 3 assists and picked up 2 ground balls for the Trojans. Brynn Sekel tallied 2 goals, an assist, 4 groundballs and won 8 draw controls.

Adele Henry and Savannah White each had 2 goals and 2 groundballs, while White added 3 draw controls. Mollie Yardley-Gontz had a goal, an assist and 2 groundballs and Jordyn Sprankle had a goal and a pair of assists. Reese Heverley had 13 saves in goal.

Henry said, “I thought our freshmen played well in their first varsity game. Sprankle played really well on offense and White was really consistent on both sides of the ball.”

Eli Keeler

BOYS TENNIS
