SPRING GROVE — It was smaller than usual group of Franklin County wrestlers that qualified for the District Class 3A Championships.

But the 8 who competed Friday at Spring Grove H.S. made some noise — 5 advanced into Saturday morning’s semifinal round by winning their first two bouts, and the other three each won a match in the consolations.

Chambersburg put 3 into the semifinals — Jaccob Stoner at 189 pounds, Deakon Snavely at 215 and Frank Barrientos at 285.

Shippensburg advanced Braden Boardman at 114 and Waynesboro’s Steven Howard got through at 133.

Still alive in the consolations is Silas Robertson (133) of Greencastle-Antrim. Chambersburg’s Isaac Brambley (127) and Abe Luffy of Ship (152) were eliminated

Stoner faced a tough foe who he had lost to before in Caden Shearer of Gettysburg in the first round. It was tied 3-3 after three periods when Stoner’s takedown with 22 seconds left evened it up. But in sudden victory, Stoner took Shearer down to his back for a 4-point nearfall and a 10-3 victory.

Barrientos crashed through his matches with pins — in 1:05 over Oliver Rumbaugh of Spring Grove and Abdoutie Sumbumdu of Middletown in 40 seconds.

A freshman, Snavely won a 4-1 decision over Brody Inman of Garden Spot, then decked Bradyn Linder of Manheim Central in the quarterfinals. Against Inman, Snavely led 2-0 on an escape and stalling point, then a 2-point nearfall with 12 seconds left sealed the win.

Boardman, a freshman for the Greyhounds, moved on with a pin and a technical fall. Howard scored a fall and a major decision to advance.

In Saturday’s semifinals, Boradman (31-3) faces Central Dauphin’s Thunder Beard (42-2); Stoner (22-9) takes on Manheim Central’s Noah Templin (36-3); Snavely (25-10) is matched up against Cole Staker of Eastern York (33-1) and Barrientos hits Gettysburg’s Nolan Reinert (30-0).
