GIRLS BASKETBALL

McConnellsburg 36, Windber 62.  On February 17 at Windber, the Lady Spartans (6) battled again the Lady Ramblers (3) in the District 5 Class 2A first-round playoff game.  After losing 62-27 just six days earlier, the Spartans knew a herculean strong performance was needed but regrettably fell short, ending their season with another defeat as Windber advanced by a 26-point margin.

The Spartans kept the Ramblers from scoring early in the first quarter, but the Ramblers rallied to lead 13-6 by its end. The Ramblers then dominated offensively, finishing the half ahead 33-15, outscoring the Spartans 20-9—much like their previous game where they led 36-16 at halftime.  In the second half Windber added eight, but not without grit and grime as the Spartan defense never gave up albeit losing more ground.  The Ramblers quickness, ball movement, and offensive rebounding offered more second shot attempts.  

The Spartans were led by Sydney Buterbaugh with nine points and five rebounds. Alyvia Newman netted six points and pulled 12 rebounds. Brookelynn Gelvin added six points.  Two starters were out on the injured list. 

Windber (20-3) was led by Kaylie Gaye with 17 points and seven rebounds, then Rylee Baer with 16 points and seven rebounds, and Sadie Pallo with 11 points.  Payton Roxby pulled 15 boards.  Windber outrebounded the Spartans 51 to 30 gaining extra shot attempts.  They outshot the Spartans 73 to 52 from the field equating to nine more field goals, with four more free throws, and with a 37% higher shot per possession result. 

The Spartans closed out their season with a 12-11 record.  Though the Spartans varsity girls basketball season ended early post-season, the team showed growth, mutual understanding, dedication, and strong teamwork throughout. Congratulations on a successful season, for the many hours committed to practice and performance, and to a pledge for a stronger, even more rewarding next season.

Windber faces Everett (2) on Thursday in a semi-final game.
