Chbg. roundup: Trojans beat Hempfield; girls wrestling goes 6-0

BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 58, Hempfield 48: The Trojans trailed by 2 points at halftime on Saturday afternoon, but dominated the second half and posted a victory in a non-league matchup against the Black Knights.

Grayson Kegerreis

Chambersburg (14-5), which has won 10 of its 11 games, outscored Hempfield (8-10) 12-4 in the third period and 20-16 in the fourth.

Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said, “It was a really hard-fought and physical game. Hempfield came out very strong in the first half and played well. We did a nice job of adjusting to the physical play.

“We also increased the pressure coming out of halftime, which led to a number of easy buckets. Our defense was much better in the second half and allowed to dictate the pace of play. We did a nice job of converting our stops and steals into buckets.”

Grayson Kegerreis was the recipient some of those baskets, scoring 11 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Colton Cornwell had 5 of his 13 and Landon Buhrman scored 4 of his 13 in the final period.

Lucas Mussman led the Black Knights with 14 points.

GIRLS WRESTLING
Trojans win Elco Duals: Chambersburg’s closest match was a 9-point win and it went 6-0 for the day to capture the championship of the Elco Duals Tournament on Saturday in Myerstown.

Reagan Evans

The Trojans, now 20-5 to finish the regular season, defeated Elco (42-33), Kutztown (70-6), York Tech (51-24), Lebanon (66-12), Kennard-Dale (54-21) and Cedar Crest (54-23).

“It was another great day on the mats for the girls,” Chambersburg coach Josh Sherman said. “I really could say something great about all of our wrestlers. We had contributions from ladies up and down the lineup.”

Three Trojans went 6-0 for the day — Piper Jones (130 pounds), Reagan Evans (136) and Makenna Lowe (155). Evans had 5 pins and Jones and Lowe had 3 each.

Coming up with 5-1 records were Jessica Li (106), Alba Rojas (142), Hadyn Fritz (148) and AUlana Stanton (190), while Lillybeth Alcantaras was 4-1 at 235.

Sherman said, “A couple of highlights were Aulana collecting her 50th career win and Makenna going 6-0 with three pins. The match of the day came in the last one — we moved Reagan up to 142 to face Cedar Crest’s Madelyn Shanfelder. Both have about the same credentials, with 50 wins as sophomores.

“This was a matchup we wanted to see for Reagan, to prepare her for the postseason. She was taken down in the first and fought off some top offense. We took top for the second and Reagan did Reagan things. She broke her down, slipped in a bar and methodically took her over for a pin.”
