G-A roundup: Big 4th quarters lift both Blue Devil teams to wins

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 75, Waynesboro 63: A big fourth quarter — including an 11-for-13 effort at the free throw line — lifted the Blue Devils to a 12-point win over the Maidens in a home Mid Penn Colonial game Tuesday night.

Waynesboro (6-9, 6-4 MPC) led by 7 points at halftime, but by the end of three periods, the game was tied 47-47. Greencastle (7-9, 4-6 MPC) then put up 28 points in the fourth quarter to salt the game away.

For the game, G-A hit 29 of 43 foul shots, while ‘Boro made 13 of 20.

In the fourth, Kiersten Swain scored 9 points for the Blue Devils, while Ellie Bigler and Sophie Fries each scored 7. Bigler was 7-for-8 shooting free throws in that period and was 11-for-14 for the game.

For Greencastle, which had lost by 7 to ‘Boro earlier in the season, Fries dropped in 21 points and Callie Izer poured in 20 — both were career-high totals. Also, Swain produced 18 points and Bigler had 11.

Bre McIlquham notched 18 points for the Maidens, while Braelynn Pearson had 14 and Aly Shockey 11.

Greencastle-Antrim 57, Waynesboro 43: The Indians held the upper hand early, but the Blue Devils put together a terrific second half, including a dominating fourth quarter, to capture a Mid Penn Colonial victory at home Tuesday night.

Waynesboro (5-11, 5-5 MPC) led 17-11 after one period and at halftime, 28-25. It was tied 38-38 after three quarters, but Greencastle (12-4, 9-1 MPC) owned the fourth quarter, outscoring ‘Boro 18-5.

With 3:52 left, holding a 50-43 lead, G-A coach Todd Stephens called a timeout and the Blue Devils moved to a spread offense. Greencastle took the clock down to 2:14 before Camden Eby made 1 of 2 free throws.

After a Waynesboro miss, G-A’s Dez Holman missed a shot, but stole the ball back after an Indian rebound and passed to Alex Albright for a basket to make it 53-43. Albright and Bryce Davidson each went 2-for-2 at the line to set the final score.

Albright popped in 21 points and got help from Cooper Green (10 points), Ryan Schick (9) and Bryce Davidson (8).

For the Indians, Dom Goodworth scored 12 points, Nate Nystrom had 10 and Rashawn Frazer-Hewitt had 9.
