G-A roundup: Blue Devils sweep Eastern York in hoops

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 44, Eastern York 31: The Blue Devils held the Golden Knights scoreless in the first quarter and turned it into a non-league victory Wednesday night in a home game.

Callie Izer

G-A (6-8) held a 19-7 lead by halftime, led by Liv Carey and Callie Izer scoring 12 of those points.

“We had our best defensive effort of the season,” Greencastle coach Scott McKeever said. “The girls understood their individual assignments and went out and executed. This was a good team win against a good team.”

Eastern York (10-5), which got 15 points from Ivory Strawsbaugh, rallied to get within 3 points midway through the fourth quarter, but a 3-pointer by Kiersten Swain stemmed the rally. Izer made 6 of 8 free throws in the final quarter to pad the lead again.

Izer scored 11 points, took down 9 rebounds and added 3 steals. Swain also scored 11 points, Ellie Bigler had 9 boards and 5 assists, Sophie Fries got 8 rebounds and Carey had 5 rebounds.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 66, Eastern York 64: The Blue Devils survived a bit of a tense ending Wednesday night to capture a non-league road victory over the Golden Knights and extend their winning streak to 4 games.

Bryce Davidson

The game was tied 63-63 with 1:10 left when G-A’s Alex Albright drove and finished on a layup. He missed the ensuing free throw, then Eastern’s Bryce Nicholson was 1-for-2 at the line to bring the Knights to within 65-64.

After forcing a Greencastle turnover with about 40 seconds left, Eastern called a timeout and ran a play, but the Blue Devils were strong on defense and gained a turnover with 5 seconds left. G-A inbounded the ball to Albright, who was fouled and made 1 of 2 at the line. EY’s half-court shot at the buzzer missed the mark.

The Golden Knights (6-8) were pretty good from the outside, though, hitting 11 3-pointers to account for more than half of their points. Nicholson led with 15 points.

For Greencastle (11-3), balanced scoring was the word. Cooper Green scored 15, Ryan Schick added 14, Bryce Davidson totaled a career-high 12, Albright scored 9 and Dez Holman and Camden Eby each tallied 8.
