BOYS SWIMMING
Chambersburg 86, Hershey 84; Chambersburg 64, Gettysburg 30: The Trojans earned a tight victory over Mid Penn Commonwealth powerhouse Hershey on Tuesday afternoon in Hershey, and also picked up a non-league win over Gettysburg.
“This was a huge win,” Chambersburg coach Chad White said. “On paper it looked like it would take a monstrous effort, because Hershey is fast and deep. In every event, every boy stepped up and raced hard and did exactly what was needed.”
Chambersburg (5-1, 3-1 MPC) swept the 100 backstroke with Cullen McGraw (54.74), Cristian Pong and Luke Ritchie doing the honors.
White said, “That set us up that if we won the last two relays, we would win the meet. Luke raced all three Hershey boys and touched them out at the end.”
In the 200 freestyle relay, Alex Kaczmark, Pong and Ethan White gave anchor Amit Tasker a decent lead, but Tasker suffered a cramp and barely edged out Hershey. He had 20 minutes to work on the cramp, then he anchored the 400 free relay team (Kaczmark, McGraw and White) to a win (3:14.85 to Hershey’s 3:19.53).
Tasker placed first in the 50 (21.39) and 100 free (47.15), beating a tough Hershey opponent in Luke Tinsley in both; Kaczmark won the 200 free (1:44.27); Pong was first in the 100 fly (52.31); and McGraw took the 500 free (4:51.02).
White said, “The medley relay, 200 free and 50 free set the tone early and we kept the momentum going.”
GIRLS SWIMMING
Hershey 107, Chambersburg 63; Gettysburg 49-45: The Trojans nearly picked up their first win of the season, but lost a close non-league meet against Gettysburg at Hershey on Tuesday afternoon. Hershey also took a Mid Penn Commonwealth win over the Trojans.
“Although we didn’t achieve a win, we still had tremendous success as a team,” Chambersburg coach Abbie Reichelderfer said. “We had several personal bests and every single girl on the team gave it their best effort.”
Ava Grove won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:12.19 for the only victory by Chambersburg (0-6, 0-4 MPC).
Audrey Keller was second in the 200 IM and the 100 fly, and was also on a pair of relay teams that were runners-up — the 200 medley (with Calla Hoffman, Grove and Brooke Reichelderfer) and the 400 free relay (with Grove, Addie Zimmerman and Hoffman). Hoffman was also second in the 100 backstroke.
