Big 2nd half enables Trojans to pull away from G-A

CHAMBERSBURG — If you watched only the first half of the second game at the Dunks for Drew event at CASHS Field House on Saturday night, you might not believe the final score.

Grayson Kegerreis

Greencastle-Antrim and Chambersburg matched up well in the first half. The Blue Devils led 19-16 at one point and trailed by a mere 3 points, 29-26, at halftime.

But then the Trojans (5-4) blew up the game, scoring the first 16 points of the second half to run away with a 69-40 victory.

“In the first half we did a nice job of playing together, moving the ball and playing sound defense,” G-A coach Todd Stephens said. “But they showed us a different look on defense in the second half, and we didn’t execute well enough to get guys in their right spots.”

By the time the Blue Devils (7-3) scored their first point in the third quarter, Chambersburg had scored 16 straight points in 4 minutes to grab a 45-26 lead. The defense created several turnovers that were converted at the other end and the Trojans’ shooters were hot from long range.

Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said, “At halftime, we put a lot of emphasize on defense, and we were better in the second half. It’s not that we were terrible in the first half, but Greencastle was well connected and shared the ball well.”

Trailing 19-16 midway through the second period, the Trojans created a pair of turnovers on consecutive plays and Colton Cornwell and Landon Buhrman finished at the other end. Stephens called a time out, but another turnover right away gave Malachi Duhaney a chance to put down a dunk that give Chambersburg a 22-19 lead, and it never trailed again.

That was a preview of the second half, in which the Trojans outscored the Blue Devils 40-14.

Ryan Schick

“We burned some timeouts, but we couldn’t seem to get it back,” Stephens said.

Chambersburg shot nearly 50% (26-for-54) and popped in 11 3-point shots (from 7 different players), its highest total of the season. Grayson Kegerreis had four of them on his way to 14 points. Landon Buhrman led the team with 15 points and Duhaney added 10.

Greencastle was paced by 10 points from Cooper Green and 7 each from Alex Albright and Ryan Schick.

Shreffler said, “Greencastle gave us everything we could handle and more. One thing that helped was that in the second quarter (when two starters were out with foul trouble), we got great contributions from the bench. We did last night, too. It has taken us a while to all get connected, but it’s starting to work.”

The Blue Devils, who start two freshmen (Dez Holman and Green) and have several others playing a lot of time, should take some good things from the game.

Stephens said, “It was a great atmosphere — a playoff kind of feel. We got to play a bigger, more physical team, which will help us. Even though we’re young, these kids compete hard, they’re willing to do the job and are very coachable. We are very excited about our guys.”

Note: In the first game of Dunks for Drew, Boiling Springs erased a lead by Shippensburg late in the game to take a 54-51 win.
