Chbg. roundup: Dry spell in 4th period sinks Trojans vs. Wilson

BOYS BASKETBALL
Wilson 46, Chambersburg 35: The Trojans did not make a basket in the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs turned a 3-point deficit after 3 quarters into an 11-point victory Monday night in a non-league game in West Lawn.

Colton Cornwell

Grayson Kegerreis hit a three and a jumper in the lane late in the third period to give Chambersburg (4-3) a 5-point lead at 33-28. Wilson (6-2) got two back by the end of the period, so it was 33-30 in the Trojans’ favor to open the fourth.

Chambersburg did not score again until Colton Cornwell made 2 of 3 free throws with 18.6 left on the clock.

“We knew it would be a really tough game, which meant we needed to play with a great deal of focus and intensity for 32 minutes,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t do that. There were moments where we looked really good and connected, but the consistency isn’t there yet.”

The Bulldogs got a 3-pointer from Correll Akings to tie the game at 33-33, then Michael Glover scored twice in a row on layups on good passes underneath. Wilson’s last basket, on an offensive rebound by Conner Moreland, made it 39-33 and the Trojans were forced to foul. Wilson made 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch to eliminate any comeback chances.

In the fourth, Chambersburg made 3 turnovers and only took a handful of shots against Wilson’s swarming defense.

Shreffler said, “We missed some good looks and also turned the ball over a couple of times. They’re a tough team to score against and our inconsistencies showed. We must take advantage of the lessons these tough road games are teaching us, because it’s still early.”

Cornwell scored 12 points for Chambersburg, and Malachi Duhaney had 10. For the Bulldogs, Glover led with 14 points.
