18-0 start guides Trojans to blowout win over Altoona

CHAMBERSBURG — Altoona made the cold, windy, two-hour trip to Chambersburg on Friday night for a Mid Penn Commonwealth boys basketball game at CASHS Field House.

But things got worse for the Mountain Lions right off the bat … much worse. The Trojans put them under an 18-0 blitzkrieg to start the game, fueled by the sharpshooting of Grayson Kegerreis, and Altoona never had a chance.

Landon Buhrman

The 71-43 win for Chambersburg (4-2, 2-2 MPC) took away some of the bad taste they’d had since a rugged loss to Central Dauphin on Tuesday.

“It was great to have a game when everybody gets in a lot of playing time,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “We had two really good practices leading up to tonight, and it carried over into how well we played.”

Kegerreis drove to the basket to start the scoring. Then, after 4 points by Landon Buhrman, Kegerreis buried 3-pointers on each of the next three possessions (on passes from Buhrman, Colton Cornwell and Josh Rudy) — for a 15-0 bulge.

A long three by Cornwell made it 18-0 before the Mountain Lions got their first points with 2:29 left. A Kegerreis trey finished the first period with a 23-5 score.

Cornwell tallied 10 points in the second quarter as the Trojans increased their lead to 47-17 by halftime and bring on the mercy rule for the entire second half.

Shreffler said, “We really moved the ball well. Guys were passing up good shots to get better shots for somebody else, and sometimes then even better shots. We shared the ball and got a lot of assists.

“And, we did much better on the boards than (Tuesday). I also thought our defense was really good early — we were forcing them to miss, we got the rebounds and we were able to get out and run.”

NOTES:  Chambersburg shot 8-for-14 on 3-point shots in the first half, while the Mountain Lions (2-5, 1-3 MPC) were 6-for-24 on all shots. For the game, the Trojans popped in 11 3-pointers … Kegerreis led with 16 points and Cornwell had 13, and neither scored in the second half … Buhrman added 9 points … Chris Wagner led the Lions with 9.
