G-A roundup: Blue Devils hold off ‘Boro rally in boys game

BOYS BASKETBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 61, Waynesboro 55: The Blue Devils led the whole way against their rival, but the Indians made it very interesting at the end of a Mid Penn Colonial game in Waynesboro on Monday night.

Cooper Green

Greencastle (4-1, 3-0 MPC) at one point held a 20-point lead in the third quarter. But ‘Boro started to chip away at the deficit and hit some 3-pointers, and eventually got to within 56-53 on a basket by Rashawn Frazier-Hewitt with 1:30 remaining.

Alex Albright made 1 of 2 free throws for G-A, then a pair of foul shots by Carter Hough put the score at 57-55 with 0:21 remaining. But Blue Devil freshman Cooper Green hit 4 straight free throws, at 0:15 and 0:07, to seal the victory.

A surge late in the second quarter gave Greencastle its healthy lead. Drives by Bryce Davidson, Green and Dez Holman made it 26-10, then after an Indian bucket, a three by Albright and a Green layup put the score at 31-12.

Albright piled up 25 points to lead the Blue Devils, and got help from Green (13 points). Green was 7-for-8 at the foul line.

Waynesboro (2-3, 2-1 MPC) trailed by 8 points, but put together a stretch of about 70 seconds in which it was 4-for-4 on 3-point attempts from 4 different players, after having hit 2 threes before that.

“That stretch made the difference,” G-A coach Scott McKeever said. “That  stretch made it impossible for us to come back.”

The Maidens put three players in double figures — Bre McIlquham with 14, Charlotte Rhodes with 11 and Madeline Nystrom with 10.

For the Blue Devils (3-4, 0-3 MPC), Kiersten Swain scored 15 points, Callie Izer had 12 points (plus 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals) and Sophie Fries scored 11 and grabbed 13 rebounds.

McKeever said, “We played well on defense for most of the night, but that one stretch turned the game. Waynesboro took it from us, but we can learn a lot from this game that will benefit us going forward.”
