WINDBER — Greencastle-Antrim’s spectacular season in girls volleyball came to an abrupt halt Saturday afternoon when the Blue Devils ran into Oakland Catholic.
G-A had won all 22 matches it played this season until the Eagles handed them a 3-0 defeat in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals at Windber H.S.
Oakland Catholic won comfortably, 25-15, in Game 1, but then had to fend off a feisty Blue Devil squad in the final two games, winning 25-23 in each.
The Eagles (22-2) will face Beaver (23-1) in a semifinal match on Tuesday.
“The girls fought hard in the second and third games,” Greencastle coach Madee Goodwin said. “But (Oakland Catholic) was a tall, tough team, and they were very well-rounded.”
The Blue Devils trailed the whole way in games 1 and 2, but did take leads in game 3, but weren’t able to keep them.
Greencastle had been thriving with strong serving in the postseason, but it wasn’t much of a factor Saturday.
Goodwin said, “We didn’t serve as tough as we normally do, but they also had a great defense.”
G-A had only 2 aces for the day, and had 7 service errors.
Abby Eagler ended her fine career at Greencastle with 9 kills, 5 service points, with 1 ace, and 8 digs. For the season, she had 406 kills, 196 points, 72 kills and 273 digs. Eagler will play next year at Bloomsburg University.
In Eagler’s four years, the Blue Devils compiled a record of 79-9. Greencastle won two District 3 championships and reached the PIAA Tournament in all four years, advancing to the quarterfinals twice.
Kylie Kerns, a three-year starter, produced 9 kills, 4 points, 7 digs and 16 assists against the Eagles. For the season, she had 236 kills, 201 points, 61 aces, 234 digs and 507 assists.
Also on Saturday, Wren Roberts posted 3 kills and 6 digs; Hayden Baer added 3 kills, 4 points and 2 blocks; Kinzee Hudson had 4 points and 8 digs, Kaitlyn Alvey had 4 points (1 ace) and 9 assists; and Jordyn Wagner knocked down 4 kills.
