GREENCASTLE — Little did Hayden Baer, the only sophomore on the Greencastle-Antrim varsity girls volleyball roster, know what was about to happen. How could anybody?
Baer smashed the ball over the net for a clean kill to give the Blue Devils a 10-8 lead midway through Game 2 in a PIAA Class 3A first-round playoff match in Greencastle on Tuesday night.
Baer then stepped back to the service line and never left until the end of the set, scoring 15 consecutive points, helping the Blue Devils rout Archbishop Carroll, 3-0, with games of 25-18, 25-8 and 25-16.
Greencastle, now 22-0, will take on Oakland Catholic (21-2), the District 7 runner-up, in a quarterfinal match on Saturday, at 1 p.m. at Windber H.S. near Johnstown.
Baer said of the serving zone she entered: “I just tried to stay calm and do what I know how to do. It’s easier because I knew if I messed up, the team would be there to pick me up.”
Asked if she’s ever served for 15 straight points, Baer said, “Never in my life.”
Before the match, Baer had averaged just 4.5 points per match. She had 18 Tuesday.
G-A coach Madee Goodwin said, “Nobody has served for that many points in a row this year. That run was just crazy.”
It also took the starch out of the Patriots (8-4), who were competitive in the first set. They trailed only 19-16 when Jordyn Wagner got a block kill. Wren Roberts then picked up four straight service points, including an ace, and a booming kill by Abby Eagler ended the game.
Goodwin said, “We were missing on some serves early, at least partly because of the atmosphere (nearly full gym), this being their last home match, and that it’s a state tournament match. But then we started playing like we usually do.
“We really knew almost nothing about (Archbishop Carroll) before tonight. So we had to wait until we started playing, and then we were able to make some adjustments. These girls are really good at that.”
During Baer’s remarkable serving run she had a couple of aces, and Wagner had 3 kills and a pair of blocks.
In the third set, Eagler had back-to-back aces and Baer and Kaitlyn Alvey each had one. The Patriots stayed in touch, at 18-14, but a screaming Eagler kill at the end of a long rally deflated Archbishop Carroll and the Blue Devils scored 6 of the next 8 points to wrap it up.
Alvey said, “I think as the match went on we served better, and we controlled the match because of that. We work all the time on serving and it seems when one of the girls gets hot, it helps everybody.”
Greencastle ended up with 15 aces and only 7 service errors.
The usual cast put up healthy stats. Eagler had 12 kills, 7 points, 3 aces and 7 digs, while Kylie Kerns had 9 kills, 7 points, 2 aces and 13 assists.
Wren Roberts contributed 5 kills, 9 points (4 aces) and 4 digs; Alvey had 4 points (3 aces) and 21 assists; Wagner ended up with 7 kills and 5 blocks; Baer added 5 kills and Kinzee Hudson came up with 8 digs.
Goodwin said, “it was nice to see Hayden get some kills, too. It’s good to switch some things up and it prove useful down the road.”
