McConnellsburg captures district championship


Boys Soccer: McConnellsburg 2, Conemaugh Township 1: 
 On October 30th, the second seeded McConnellsburg Spartans faced the top-seeded Conemaugh Township Indians for the District 5 Class A championship at Windber Stadium.  The match was highly competitive and remained closely contested until the end, with the defending district champions retaining their title.  This victory marked the Spartans’ fourth consecutive win against the Indians (18-2), ending the Indians’ 15-game winning streak.

Next up the District 5 top-seeded Spartans (22-0) will host District 3 seed 3 Lancaster Mennonite (14-4-2) in the first round of the PIAA 1A boys’ soccer championship on November 4th at 6 p.m. 

The opening goal occurred three minutes into the first half when Spartan right wing Ethan Lang advanced the ball near the endline and delivered a precise hard left pass to Grady Shives, who converted with a well-placed kick near inside left upright elating the Spartan fans.  The second goal was achieved unassisted by Spartan Hoyt Glenn, who intercepted a forward pass from an Indian defender, navigated around another defender, and scored with a high shot to the left side of the goal from 25 yards out, again erupting fan jubilation.  In the final minute of the half, a tripping foul committed by the Spartans at midfield resulted in a direct free kick for the Indians.  Their kick landed ten yards from the goal amidst a cluster of players; capitalizing on the loose ball, the Indians scored at the right side of the net.  At the half, the score stood at 2-1 in favor of the Spartans.

The second half concluded without any goals, although the Indians significantly increased their offensive pressure, registering four times as many shots on goal compared to the first half. However, the Spartan defense remained resilient, and the goalkeeper successfully saved all attempts.
