DALLASTOWN — When you don’t give up and you keep kicking and fighting, sometimes great things happen.
You could say that about the Chambersburg boys soccer team after the Trojans stunned Dallastown 3-2 in overtime in a first-round game of the District 3 Class 4A playoffs on Tuesday night.
Down 2-0 in the second half, Chambersburg fought back to tie the game with 5 minutes left and send it into overtime. With about 20 seconds left in the first OT, the Wildcats committed a foul about 40 yards from their goal.
The Trojans’ Noah Brena took the kick and booted it into the box. Adan Barrientos got his head on the ball and sent it to the far side of the goal mouth. Teammate Theo Deinboeck got to the loose ball first, made a nice first touch and tucked it into the net with just 0:01 left on the clock.
“I’m not sure I can even talk,” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “I can not be any happier with this team’s fight tonight. Down 2-0 in the district playoffs against a good team is not a good place to be.”
The Trojans (10-3-4), the No. 10 seeded team, will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday at No. 2 Conestoga Valley (14-3), a 3-1 winner over McCaskey in the 1st round.
Dallastown (12-6), the No. 7 seed, scored once in the first half, and then again just 4 minutes into the second half on a corner kick, similar to the game-winning goal.
Grove said, “We’ve played Dallastown before and we know they are a physical and tough and will grind it out, and they’re good in the air. We trailed, but all offseason and in the season, we preached to the guys to never give up. And they didn’t.”
With 23 minutes left, the Trojans broke through on a direct kick goal from Anton Winter. He took a shot from just outside the 18 on the right side and curled his kick into the upper 90 on the near side.
“We were right back in it, and we had momentum,” Grove said.
With 5 minutes left, Noah Mulewich collected the ball in transition, carried it behind the defense, then placed a pass into the middle where Nate Folk was able to punch it into the far corner to tie the game.
Grove said, “The last 5 minutes were just chaos, with not possession. In overtime, I could see we were starting to get fatigued.”
Chambersburg out-shot the Wildcats 10-8 and had more corner kicks (4-3). Goalkeeper Tyson Shanholtz made 5 saves.
“Barrientos was a rock for us at center back,” Grove said. “He is a leader for us and he sacrifices his body in key moments. Edwin Ramirez and Bramere Pittman played well in the midfield and did a lot of the dirty work to create for their teammates. Anton’s free kick was phenomenal.”
