Blue Devils eliminated from districts in field hockey

LITITZ — Greencastle-Antrim’s field hockey team did not come close to qualifying for the District 3 Tournament a year ago.

This fall, the Blue Devils took a big step forward and advanced to districts.

Unfortunately, in the first round of the Class 2A bracket on Tuesday, G-A was defeated 9-0 by No. 2 seed and perennial PIAA contender Warwick.

Greencastle finishes with a 9-7 record, after going 5-12 last year.

“It is incredible to see how far the program has come in a year,” Blue Devil coach Keara Allshouse said. “I can’t wait to see what next year brings. It was an excellent season for the ladies and I’m so proud of all of them.”

G-A goalie Rebecca Jones made 28 saves, while defenders Acacia Long and Maggie Spidel each made a defensive stop.

Allshouse said, “Acacia Long and the defense stopped so many impressive corner attempts and everyone was back on every defensive play.

“Rebecca dove for many goalie saves and the entire team worked well together to stop many scoring attempts. I am so proud of this team — they are tenacious and always give it their 100%.”

The Warriors (15-2) will host No. 7 Lampeter-Strasburg (12-6-1) in a quarterfinal game Saturday.
