McConnellsburg Triumphs in Overtime Against Rockwood

GIRLS SOCCER: McConnellsburg 3, Rockwood 2.  The McConnellsburg Lady Spartans (11-2, 8-1 ICC-S) travelled to face the Rockwood Lady Rockets in an ICC rematch on October 2nd, ultimately prevailing in overtime by a single goal.

In the first half, Rockwood opened the scoring eleven minutes into play when their striker capitalized on a forward pass from midfield and converted with a precise shot past the Spartan goalkeeper. Although the Spartans led in overall shots and shots on goal in the period, they trailed 1-0 at halftime.

The Lady Spartans increased their offensive pressure throughout the second half, persistently challenging the Rockwood keeper. Their efforts paid off twenty minutes into the period, when a throw-in from the left front field set up an attacking sequence. Gemma Gordan fired a shot at goal that was deflected by the keeper, but Serenity Rengifo, positioned on the right forward wing, quickly acted with a kick that found the right side of the net, leveling the match at 1-1. With just nine minutes remaining, another Spartan throw-in from the mid-back field led to a crucial opportunity. The ball was handled and kicked just under midfield, rolling toward the Rockwood goalie. A misplay near the 18-yard line allowed mid-fielder Margaret McKelvy to capitalize, sending in the go-ahead goal to put McConnellsburg up 2-1. Rockwood responded with urgency as the clock wound down. In the final thirty-three seconds of regulation, their right wing lofted a shot from beyond the 18-yard line. The ball reached the outstretched fingertips of the Spartan keeper, who lost contact, allowing it to drop into the goal and tie the game, forcing overtime.

Rockwood kicked off the first overtime period, aiming for a home victory. However, it was McConnellsburg who continued to dominate in terms of shots and shots on goal. With two minutes left in overtime, Rengifo delivered a corner kick that was initially cleared by the Rocket keeper. McKelvy was in position and converted the rebound with a short kick, securing the Spartans’ victory.
