BOYS SOCCER
Chambersburg 2, Cumberland Valley 0: The Trojans opened their Mid Penn Commonwealth season with a big-time win over the defending state champion Eagles in New Kingstown on Monday evening.

Bramere Pittman

“The boys put in an unbelievable shift tonight,” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “The group bought into what we needed to do and get the result. I thought we were on our front foot for the majority of the game.”

Midway through the first half, Noah Mulewich took a pass from Levi Findley, took on two defenders and then lifted a well-placed shot over the keeper. Later, about 10 minutes into the second half, Theo Deinboeck added an insurance goal when he struck a volley from about 30 yards out into the net.

Grove said, “We played stout defensively. Our back line put in another fantastic performance, along with our two center defensive mids Bramere Pittman and Edwin Ramirez.”

The Trojans (1-0-1, 1-0 MPC) out-shot CV, 16-6, and keeper Tyson Shanholtz made 3 saves.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Chambersburg 3, Spring Grove 2: The Trojans outlasted the Rockets in a non-league match on the road Monday night, taking the fifth set, 15-12, to open their season.

Alexis Poe

“This is a good road win for us,” Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said. “Spring Grove is a solid team and they made very few mistakes. Their one outside is really good and we had trouble stopping her.”

The Trojans won the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-23, but the Rockets turned it around to win 25-13 and 25-16 to tie it up.

Frelin said, “We did what we needed to do to come out on top — we came back in each of the sets we won. Our girls played with poise and determination and they never really got rattled. We slowed down their offense with our block touches, which allowed us to run some good offense.”

Chambersburg spread out the stats among many players. Lexi Poe had 13 service points, including 3 aces, and had 8 kills and 22 digs. Kasey Moser picked up 14 kills and added 16 digs.

Nizaya Hawkins put up 11 kills and 7 points, Kaylie Stull led in digs with 23 and also had 9 points, Ava Zeigler piled up 47 assists and Riley Cramer contributed 5 locks.

Cumberland Valley 2, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans opened their season against a strong opponent and were blanked by the Eagles in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Wednesday night at Trojan Stadium.

CV (3-0) scored in the last minutes of the first half (Ady Kelly) and in the second half after a loose ball on a corner kick by Grace Fidler.

“Overall, we put in a solid performance,” Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said. “We were particularly threatening on our set pieces, but just didn’t quite have the quality on the final ball.

“Senior Katy Weller and junior Moriah Martin had excellent defensive performances tonight.”
