G-A ousted in softball semifinals by Red Land, 7-5

SHIPPENSBURG — Greencastle-Antrim outscored Red Land 3-2 on Thursday afternoon.

Unfortunately, that was in a completion of a suspended District 3 Class 5A semifinal game that the Patriots led 5-2 when it was stopped by rain Tuesday. So Red Land ended up as a 7-5 victor and will advance to the district final on Friday.

“I think playing through the rain (on Tuesday) got us,” G-A coach Mark DeCarli said. “Today, I thought we were excited and fired up. Even when they hit that home run, I didn’t see us let down. We could have given up, but we came back.”

The Patriots’ Carson Pyfer clubbed a two-run home run in the fifth inning off Kiersten Swain that hit the top of the fence and bounced over, giving her team a 7-2 advantage, which proved to be huge.

Red Land pitcher Abby Wagenheim took a one-hitter into the seventh inning, when the Blue Devils’ offense finally woke up. To that point, Wagenheim had retired all nine batters she had faced in the continuation of the game.

But Kaidyn Zimmerman led off with a line single to center and Erika Hoover grounded into a fielder’s choice for the first out. Then Kindal Rice hit a seeing-eye single up the middle and Bailey Leckron smoked a double down the left-field line to drive in both runners and make the score 7-4.

Paiton Gordon chopped a grounder to third, which she beat out, and the throw to first was errant, which scored the fifth run. With the tying run at the plate, Wagenheim bore down and ended the game on a grounder back to her and a strikeout.

Greencastle (18-3) will now host Twin Valley (18-3) on Friday at noon for third place.

DeCarli said, “The girls know that I want to win that (third-place) game, because I want us in the upper bracket (for the PIAA Tournament, which begins Monday). I have a team here that’s good enough to go on and win states.”

Red Land (18-3) will face Solanco (21-1) in the championship game on Friday at 1 p.m. at Millersville University.
