BASEBALL
Chambersburg 3, Mechanicsburg 2: A 3-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, highlighted by a huge hit from Keaton Barclay, delivered a come-from-behind Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Wildcats at Greene Township Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Chambersburg (5-12, 3-10 MPC) trailed 2-0 to start its final at-bat. After an out, Ryne Mills, Wyatt Martin and Evan Brown drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Ceagan Truett also worked a walk to bring in the first run, then the Trojans made the second out.
It was up to Barclay and he came through big-time, grounding a hit through the shortstop hole into left field and Martin and Brown were able to cross the plate for the win.
“With two outs, it was the perfect scenario,” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. “We did not have our fastest guy at second and Keaton didn’t hit the ball really hard, so that gave Evan time to get home easily. It was great for Barclay to big hit because he’s been in a slump lately. It was nice to finally get a big hit when we needed it.”
Mills checked Mechanicsburg (10-7) on 6 hits and 3 walks through 6 innings, giving up 2 runs. Kadyn McMullen was credited with the win with a perfect inning inning in the seventh.
Folmar said, “Mills was really, really good for his sixth straight outing in a row. We just haven’t given him any run support. For the most part, we’ve played pretty good baseball, but we just need more offense.”
SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 10, Mechanicsburg 4: Karley Skultety bombed a grand slam in the fifth inning to clinch a Mid Penn Commonwealth win for the Trojans over the Wildcats on the road Wednesday afternoon.
Chambersburg (13-4, 10-3 MPC) scored 5 times in the fourth and 4 in the fifth to blow open a game that had been tied, 1-1.
“The girls came out a little bit flat today, which was surprising since we’ve been off for six days,” Trojan coach Chris Skultety. “But once Sanay Jones sparked us with a (double) to right-center in the fourth, the bats caught fire and we started hitting like we are capable.”
Kori Leedy held Mechanicsburg (9-7) to a run on 4 hits and one walk through 5 innings. Issie Slimmer worked the final 2 innings.
In the top of the first, Bree Paetow hit a fly ball to left field for a triple and scored on the play on a subsequent error.
Jones hit her double leading off the fourth and Marley Onomastico followed with a hit. Josey Snavely hit a ball to first base, but an error allowed two runs to score. Hits by Erissa Varner and Paetow loaded the bases. Addison Gsell brought in a run with an infield hit, then Malia Cramer singled in the fifth run, and Varner scored on a throw to second.
Jones and Onomastico walked in the fifth, and after two outs, Paetow also drew a walk. Skultety then unloaded a shot to left-center for a grand slam, her third homer of the season.
“We put a couple new girls in some spots today and they stepped up,” coach Skultety said. “Josey had two really good at-bats and made a highlight reel play at second base. Gsell and Paetow also turned in web gems.
“We’re hoping we get out last three games in, because we have a chance to get to the No. 4 seed (in the district rankings) and host a couple of home games.”
