Chambersburg roundup: Softball team blanks Mifflin County

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 10, Mifflin County 0: Two Trojan pitchers combined for a 3-hit shutout and their teammates knocked out 12 hits in a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Huskies in Lewistown on Tuesday afternoon.

Issie Slimmer

“We struggled a little with energy at the beginning, but came together and got after it to put the game out of reach,” Chambersburg coach Chris Skultety said. “Nice to get two wins on two long trips in two days. We continue to fight for good position in the postseason.”

Kori Leedy threw 6 innings of 2-hit ball, and Issie Slimmer finished up with an inning that had one hit for the Trojans (11-4, 8-3 MPC).

Chambersburg led only 3-0 until adding 2 in the sixth inning and 5 in the seventh.

Bree Paetow hit a double, a sacrifice fly and collected 3 runs batted in. Addison Gsell and Marley Onomastico each put up 2 hits.

Skultety said, “It as a well-balanced win – we got contributions throughout the lineup. Congrats to Bree Paetow, who became only the third player in program history to get to 100 in two categories — she scored her 100th run today (the junior had earlier reached 100 hits).”

Tara Harmon got her 100th hit and 100th run with a home run in the Mid Penn playoffs in 2016, and Paetow’s sister Sam reached those marks last year.

Evan Brown

BASEBALL
Mifflin County 3, Chambersburg 2: The Trojans trailed 3-0 after 6 innings and rallied in the seventh, but fell short of tying the game and dropped a Mid Penn Commonwealth decision to the Huskies on Tuesday afternoon at Lewistown.

In the Chambersburg seventh, Kadyn Mullen drew a one-out walk and Tyler Foreman singled. After an out, Wyatt Martin walked to load the bases. Evan Brown then grounded a single to left, which brought in 2 runs. But the next batter flew out to short left for the final out.

Ryne Mills threw 6 innings for the Trojans (4-11, 2-9 MPC), allowed only 4 hits and 2 earned runs, walked 2 and struck out 6.

Chambersburg managed only 4 hits, including a 2-for-4 day by Brown.

Matt Tucker

BOYS LACROSSE
State College 19, Chambersburg 6: The Trojans took an early lead, but the Little Lions recovered to post a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory Tuesday evening on the road.

“It’s hard to travel 2-plus hours to play a really good with a first-time starter (Everett Wetherald) in the goal,” Chambersburg coach Joey Wilmot said. “But he made some nice saves (6 in the first period) and we had a 3-1 lead. But we started getting penalties and got away from our game plan and State College went on a run.

“I’m proud of the way we came out and took it to them early. That shows a lot of mental toughness.”

Wetherald finished with 10 saves. Blake Dupont and Ryan Cosey each scored 2 goals for the Trojans (6-9, 5-8 MPC), and Quinn Makosy and Blake Hitchens each had one goal. Matt Tucker contributed a save.

GIRLS LACROSSE
