G-A falls just short in wild comeback vs. Trojans in baseball

SCOTLAND — What appeared to be a relatively comfortable win for Chambersburg turned into some white knuckles and sweaty palms and ended in a crazy way.

Ceagan Truett

The Trojans, leading 9-0 going into the top of the seventh inning, made three errors and issued 6 walks, and Greencastle-Antrim almost pulled off a huge comeback before falling short 9-7 in a non-league baseball game Friday afternoon at Greene Township Park.

“We played a great, clean baseball game for six innings today,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “We honestly should have gotten out of the seventh on about 10 pitches, but we booted a couple of ground balls. After the errors, Greencastle put together a couple of hits and we couldn’t find the strike zone.

“But at the end of the day, a win is a win, and we’ll take it.”

G-A coach Eric Shaner said, “I was proud of the fight our guys showed in the seventh, but we gave away too many at-bats and didn’t pitch well enough to win today.”

The offense started strong for Chambersburg (4-9), with two runs in the first inning and five more in the second.

In the first, Ryne Mills led off with a double and Evan Brown and Keaton Barclay drew walks. Ceagan Truett then came through with a 2-run single.

Mills received a walk in the second, then five runs scored after two were out. Brown was hit by a pitch and Barclay walked to load the bases. After a balk scored Mills, Truett once again came through with a single to center that scored two runners. A double by Kam Mauriello set up Brycen Murray for a two-run base hit to left and a 7-0 lead.

The Trojans added to the lead in the fifth. After an error put the leadoff runner on, Tate Brookens singled and Brown walked to load the bases. Barclay hit a sacrifice fly for one run and the other scored on a wild pitch.

Folmar said, “We got timely two-out hits on a couple of occasions that gave us a pretty good lead. We did have a couple more chances to increase the lead, but didn’t, and it could have come back to cost us.”

Kadyn McMullen

“We didn’t show up ready to play at the beginning,” Shaner said, “and we struggled with the tight strike zone. We had too many walks and had too many hittable pitches. Chambersburg took better approaches at the plate early on and built a lead that was ultimately too big to come back from. Frustrating loss.”

Chambersburg opened the door a crack for G-A (7-6) by making errors in two straight ground balls in the seventh inning. Bryce Davidson walked to load the bases, and then the Blue Devils made the second out.

Walks to Elvin Robles and Carter McCauley pushed in runs, Nolan Sullivan scored another on an infield single and Robles scored on a wild pitch. Cam Rakaczewski loaded the bases again with a walk, and another walk to Avery Horst plated the fifth run. An error scored two more runs and Mason Mellott walked.

But Brady Truett was finally able to get the final out with a little help. Davidson hit a grounder that appeared to have a chance to get through the left side and into the outfield, which would likely have tied the game. But the ball struck the Blue Devil runner headed to third base, which is an out, and the game was over.

Kadyn McMullen pitched a strong 6 innings to get the win for the Trojans, shutting out the Blue Devils on 3 hits, 2 walks and 1 strikeout. Greencastle scored its 7 runs in the last inning on 1 hit, 3 errors and 6 walks.
