FAYETTEVILLE — The winds of Norlo Park, blowing out to left field, were in full evidence Tuesday afternoon.
In a game that featured six home runs, Chambersburg had four of them, producing seven runs on longballs, and demolished Mechanicsburg 12-2 in a Mid Penn Commonwealth softball game.
“I didn’t expect that kind of game, Trojan coach Chris Skultety said. “They gave Cumberland Valley a good game (6-0 loss).”
The teams had their pregame warmups delayed by a storm that included hail. The game was delayed another 10 minutes in the top of the first inning by rain. And then the thunder started.
Leading off the bottom of the first, Bree Paetow hit a high fly to center that carried just over the fence. The Trojans (7-2, 4-2 MPC) tacked on three more runs on a double by Karley Skultety, singles by Malia Cramer, Sanay Jones, Bailey Summers and a Wildcat error.
In the second, Erissa Varner walked, Paetow singled and Skultety absolutely pole-axed a shot to left-center that would have carried the fence even if it was against a stiff wind.
“She just threw me one right down the middle,” Skultety said. “I didn’t see where it landed, but it might have been the farthest I’ve hit one.”
After an out, Cramer blasted a line shot over the fence in left, and that was it for Mechanicsburg starter Jada Lacey. Marley Onomastico greeted reliever Kayla Yohe with a double and she eventually scored from second base — yes, second base — on a wild pitch.
In the third inning, Skultety got her third hit of the game and Addison Gsell then got hold of one and sent a two-run shot to left.
“Even when the wind is blowing out, we’re just trying for line drives and ground balls,” coach Skultety said. “The home runs will take care of themselves. Three of those four homers were line drives.”
Starting pitcher Kori Leedy (7-2) went three innings and allowed only 2 hits and no runs. Issie Slimmer entered in the fourth and gave up solo home runs to left to the first two batters she faced — Mack Giblin and Rylin Magee.
In her two innings, Slimmer gave up 5 hits, but was helped out by a 6-4-3 double play to end the fifth.
Coach Skultety said, “We played great defense again, and that’s what we need to do with Kori pitching because she’s not going to strike out a bunch.”
Next up for the Trojans are games against Cumberland Valley and Central Dauphin, the teams they are looking up at in the Commonwealth standings.
Karley Skultety said, “I think we’re in much better shape going up against them now than hitting them right at the beginning of the season. We’ve been working hard and we’ll be ready for those games.”
NOTES: Cramer made a nice diving catch in centerfield to end the first inning with two Wildcats on base … She also went 4-for-4 with 2 runs and a run batted in … Chambersburg’s lone error was on a wind-blown pop-up … The Wildcats are 5-3 (3-2 MPC).
