G-A roundup: Softball suffers 1st defeat to strong South Western team

South Western 7, Greencastle-Antrim 3: The Blue Devils picked up their first defeat of the season on Thursday afternoon in Hanover, falling to the Mustangs, who also came into the non-league game with an unbeaten record.

South Western (8-0) is ranked No. 3 in Class 6A in District 3 and G-A (7-1) is now ranked No. 2 in 5A. The Mustangs won the 5A title last year and reached the PIAA semifinals.

The Mustangs scored 4 runs off starter Kaidyn Zimmerman in the first inning, helped by 4 walks and 2 hits. They also scored 3 more, all unearned, off reliever Paiton Gordon in the second, but she shut them out over the final 5 innings.

However, Greencastle was facing one of the top pitchers in the district in Jayda Koontz. She allowed 6 hits and one walk while striking out 5. Koontz also went 3-for-3 with a double.

The Blue Devils scored all 3 of their runs in the third inning and all were unearned. Zhen Reuter, who went 3-for-4, and Caroline Logsdon hit singles and Meadow Gambacurta reached on an error and all three players scored on errors. But G-A had only 2 more baserunners after that.
