The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers pulled out a pair of tight Mason Dixon Christian Conference wins over Calvary Christian Tuesday in baseball and girls soccer.
BASEBALL: CVCS 9, Calvary 8. Gage Brookens smacked a three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Blazers to a 9-8 victory over Calvary.
With the Blazers trailing 8-6 entering the final inning, Reece Witmer walked and A.J. Sloan delivered a single, setting the stage for Brookens, who sent the first pitch sailing over the centerfield fence for the dramatic victory.
The Blazers (1-3, 1-2 MDCC) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Nathan Minnier hit the first pitch of the inning over the fence in right-center for the first run, and the Blazers added two more.
Some walks and Blazer defensive lapses helped Calvary build an 8-3 lead after four innings, but the Blazers chipped away with a run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth.
“I was so proud of the boys for not giving up and winning in such dramatic fashion,” Blazers coach Ed McBeth said.
Micah Ramsey struck out all three batters he faced in the top of the seventh to earn the win. Brookens had three hits, adding a double and a single to his home run, Jensen Henninger hit two doubles, and Minnier cracked a single in addition to his homer.
SOCCER: CVCS 3, Calvary 1. The Blazers turned in a strong defensive effort and defeated Calvary 3-1.
Reagan Witmer, Addison Teal and Kaitlyn Garvin each scored a goal for the Blazers (2-1, 2-0 MDCC). Goalkeeper Kylaya Martin made four saves before having to exit the game with an injury.
“Our defense did really well at keeping Calvary’s attack under control,” Blazers coach Tim Hott said. “Our offense created a lot of chances and had good ball movement for most of the game.”
