G-A roundup: Blue Devils cruise in softball; JB wins baseball

SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 18, James Buchanan 3: The Blue Devils scored 7 runs in a pair of innings on a cold and blustery Wednesday afternoon and took just 3 innings to defeat the Rockets in a Mid Penn Colonial game in Mercersburg.

Kindal Rice

Greencastle (3-0, 2-0 MPC) scored 7 runs in the first inning, 4 in the second and 7 more in the third to wrap up the quick win.

Meadow Gambacurta had a huge day at the plate for G-A, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run, and driving in 4 runs. Bailey Leckron was 2-for-3, with a double and homer, and knocked in a pair of runs.

In addition, Zhen Reuter was 2-for-2, and Kylie Kerns and Erika Hoover were each 2-for-3, with Kerns coming up with 3 RBIs. Kindal Rice drove in 4 runs on a 2-run single in the first inning and sacrifice flies in the second and third innings.

Swain pitched the first 2 innings to get the win, giving up 2 unearned runs, and Lydia Pryke pitched the final inning.

For James Buchanan (1-2, 0-2 MPC), Lilianna Wylie hit a run-scoring double and Brooklyn Sanchez ripped a triple.

BASEBALL
James Buchanan 2, Greencastle-Antrim 0: The Blue Devils battled a good Rocket team and a fierce, cold wind Wednesday afternoon and came out on the losing end of the Mid Penn Colonial game at home.

Jaxson Bostick

“We did not play that well today,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “But I told the kids that we played a good team today and we were right there with them, despite that.”

James Buchanan (3-1, 1-1 MPC) scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings against Greencastle starter Jaxson Bostick. In the fourth, two runners moved up to second and third on a passed ball, and Drew Crouse hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

In the sixth, Hayden Sanchez reached on a G-A error and Jimmy Bell was hit by a pitch. On a grounder to second, the Blue Devils tried for a double play, but after the throw to first was made, Sanchez broke for home, and his slide to the outside of the plate avoided the tag.

For Greencastle (2-1, 1-1 MPC) Bostic allowed only 1 hit in 5 innings, walked 4 and fanned 8. Carter McCauley pitched 2 innings and struck out 2 and walked 2.

For JB, Jake Miller allowed only 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8 in 6.1 innings. Carter Hissong got the final 2 outs, both on K’s, to finish the game.

Shaner said, “Miller pitched a heck of a game, and so did Bostic. We gave up a few too many walks and had some costly errors. And we hit a couple of hard-hit balls into the wind that were caught.”
