HERSHEY — The first PIAA medal awarded in girls wrestling for a Franklin County athlete will go to Shippensburg freshman Olivia Kearns.
Kearns (34-2) was 2-0 in consolation bouts on Friday at 112 pounds. She can finish as high as third place with two wins on Saturday, and the worst she can finish is sixth.
She will have tough sledding in her first match tomorrow. She will take on Tamara Humphries of Brashears, which is a rematch of a first-round bout on Thursday won by Humphries, 14-6.
In her first match of the day Friday, Kearns matched up with Elco’s Kylie Trostle. Until states, Kearns’ only defeat of the season came against Trostle in a regular-season tournament. But Kearns returned the favor and beat Trostle in the District 3 tournament.
Friday, Kearns jumped ahead with a first-period takedown, but Trostle tied it 3-3 in the second. Before the period ended, Kearns gained a reversal and was awarded a penalty point to take a 6-3 lead after two. And that’s where it ended, because Kearns rode Trostle for the entire third period.
In her second bout, Kearns took control early with a takedown against Alysiana Ierley of York Suburban, and then she turned her to her back and notched a pin in just 45 seconds.
Chambersburg’s Ashton Romberger extended his stay at states to two bouts on Friday. In the consolation rounds at 139 pounds, Romberger earned a 6-1 decision over TJ Allison of Trinity (Dist. 7) to advance to the next round, but there he was eliminated by Patrick Woloshyn of Council Rock South by a 14-5 major.
In his first match, Romberger was tied 1-1 with Allison in the third period. But Romberger secured a takedown with 29 seconds left and added a pair of back points. In the second match, Woloshyn was able to take Romberger down four times.
Romberger, who will wrestle at Wilkes U. next year, finished his senior season with a 35-12 record.
The Trojan girls had a competitor on Friday, with Jessica Li in the girls consolations at 106. But in her first bout of the day, she was pinned in 1:27 by Ella Trahan of Fort Cherry. Li finished her sophomore season with a 24-7 record.
