BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 54, Waynesboro 42: The Indians had everything going their way early, but the Trojans turned the game around midway through the second quarter and collected a non-league victory Monday night at CASHS Field House.
The win pretty much wraps up the No. 4 seed in the Class 6A District 3 playoffs, which means at least one home game, and possibly two for Chambersburg (17-4) when the playoffs begin next Tuesday, which finishes the regular season with a 17-4 record.
The Indians (13-8) likely needed a win to qualify for the playoffs, after starting the day at No. 17 in the rankings, with the first 16 teams qualifying.
“Senior Night can be really tricky emotionally and I think you saw evidence of that throughout the game when we weren’t quite as sharp as usual,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “However, Waynesboro played a role in that because they play really good defense. Being down two starters has been a challenge for us, but the guys continue to respond and find ways to get it done.”
Waynesboro, which had won 7 consecutive games coming into Monday, pulled out to a 22-14 lead in the second quarter when Julian Mencia and Eric Jacobs hit threes and Alex Torbica scored underneath.
Elu McDonald then got loose for back-to-back layups to get Chambersburg started and the Trojans ended the half on a 10-0 run to take a 24-22 advantage. J.J. Kelly hit two free throws in the run, Landon Buhrman hit a layup and Ayden Silvestre finished it off with a fast-break layup, with Buhrman getting the assist.
Shreffler said, “After getting out to a slow start, I was really happy how we responded through the middle quarters while taking a really good punch from them.”
Kelly opened the third quarter with a dunk, but the Indians stayed close, at 29-28 after a bucket by Carter Hough. But Chambersburg then ripped off a 9-0 run to take a 38-28 lead. Colton Cornwell hit a three, Kelly slid in a reverse layup and Ben Etter and Buhrman scored on fast-break layups.
In the fourth period, Kelly had another dunk, then scored twice to trade baskets with Waynesboro, but a Kelly put-back and 3-pointer closed the door with a 52-36 lead.
“I would like to congratulate coach Tom Hoffman and Waynesboro for an excellent season,” Shreffler said. “They had won seven straight to put themselves in position to qualify for districts, which is a big deal at the 6A level. They have been playing really good basketball with great desperation over the past three weeks, with every contest a playoff-like game. Tommy did a phenomenal job and the team responded by getting better as the season progressed.”
Kelly posted 20 points, Cornwell scored 12 and Buhrman added 8. For the Indians, Alex Torbica tallied 12 points and Rayshawn Hewitt added 10.
