BOYERTOWN — The District 1 champion, Boyertown, had a bit too much firepower for Chambersburg.
The Bears collected 41-20 victory over the Trojans on their home mat in the first round of the PIAA Team Wrestling Championship tournament on Tuesday night.
“The kids wrestled very well, with great effort throughout the lineup,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “I am so proud of these kids — they contested every point tonight.”
It was also a big moment for Mentzer — it was his final dual meet as the Trojan coach. He had told athletic director Shawn Kimple earlier in the day that he would resign at the end of the postseason, and he told the team Tuesday night.
“I decided sometime in the fall it was going to be my last year,” Mentzer said. “I’ve been going year round with this for 16 years (10 as the head coach, 6 as assistant under Doug Rine), and that’s with just a week or so off a year. I just said it was enough. I believe I did all I can do, and it’s time to move on to something else.”
The Trojans finish the dual meet season with a 15-5 record. Boyertown (22-2) will take on Council Rock South, which knocked off Gettysburg 38-24, in a quarterfinal at Altoona on Friday.
Chambersburg did manage 5 wins, but got bonus points in only 2 of them. The Bears won 8, including 7 bouts with bonus points.
The Trojans prevailed in pair of narrow decisions. At 139, Ashton Romberger took on Beck Babb. After a scoreless first, Babb escaped, but Romberger went ahead 3-1 with a takedown. In the third, Romberger escaped, Babb tied it with a takedown, but Romberger fashioned an escape to win 5-4.
Mentzer said, “Romberger beat a kid who is state-ranked who had beaten him at the King of the Mountain tournament.”
At 189, Jaccob Stoner pulled out a 7-6 win over Josh Larrimore. A pair of reversals by Stoner had him trailing 5-4 after two. In the third, Larrimore earned an escape, but Stoner grabbed the win by taking Larrimore down.
The match began at 107 and Isaac Brambley gave the Trojans an early lead by pinning Jake Stanchak at 4:59. Boyertown built a 12-6 lead before Zach Sherman produced an 8-3 decision over Brody Coleman. He trailed 3-1 after the first period, but two takedowns helped him gain the win.
The other Chambersburg victory came at 285 pounds, with Frank Barrientos racking up a 16-1 technical fall over Michael Palmiero.
In Mentzer’s 10 years at the helm, the Trojans piled up a combined record of 122-58, a .677 winning percentage. They qualified for the PIAA team tournament three times, including their best season, in 2022-23. Chambersburg was 21-5 in that season and finished in the top 6 in the PIAA team event.
He had one state champion as a head coach, Luke Nichter in 2020, and one as an assistant, Garett Hammond in 2012 and 2013.
“I don’t like losing, or being not competitive,” Mentzer said. “That’s why we put the work in, to not be in that situation.”
He said he will treasure the relationships he has made more than anything.
“I’m probably most proud of the relationships I’ve built with the kids,” Mentzer said. “Plus, the other coaches and the coaches on our staff, and all the relationships you build in this sport.
“I think the program is in pretty good shape. We have good numbers (on the high school team) and we have a very good crew coming back next year. The numbers are up in the middle school program and in the youth program. I think there’s a lot of talent in the program.”
